There is selfshadowing...
It's not that good then, or not very contrasty, its kind of funny how the more realistic something gets the more you notice natural shadowing, for example the rim of his hat should be casting a pretty noticeale shadow all the time but it doesn't.

Only if the light is not diffused. Think about it, do you always cast perfect, sharp shadows? Only in direct, bright light. The game seems to have a good deal of dynamic light. There are a few scenes in that vid where he has some pretty sharp shadows...

Thats my point though, most of know how something should look, and thats why our brains can tell the difference between something CG and something real, when the line between the two grows smaller we notice indiscrepancies.

It's like one minute im saying wow that looks so good, but you get pulled out of the experience because of low polygons or shadows which don't look realistic.

This game is deffinately a step in the right direction but its kind of akward to watch for me.

that's the issue i have with it. it's ahead of it's time. we need tech that can render characters and worlds with as much fluidity and life as those faces. but current tech can't do it. especially not in an open world game. so we get a jarring contrast between face and character/world. like someone has stuck a photograph of a face into the head of an action figure...lol.

they would have done better to stylise the hell out of it imo. make the difference in quality less weird to watch while retaining the impeccable lip-syncing.

I've just realised how awesome the interrogations could potentially be; instead of ordinary button prompts or symbols, we're relying on subtle hints in the character's actual face to tell us how we should be responding. The immersion will be remarkable.

The technology would greatly benefit any game, but it's being put to the best of its uses here. So yeah, I'm actually quite excited.

Some informative hands-on, cant wait!
When L.A. Noire first broke cover, it was dismaying to see so many gamers making rank preconceptions about it being another free roam title bearing all the hallmarks of Rockstar mainstay Grand Theft Auto. Untrue. In fact a lengthy hands-on session reveals L.A. Noire to be a more complex, yet entirely accessible experience that belies all of the developer's output to date. Both Rockstar and Team Bondi are taking a massive gamble with this grimy cross-section of 1940's Americana, but the originality on display here simply has to be shouted from the rooftops.
With a bare minimum of 20 hours of punchy gameplay promised, the barrage of information, evidence and characters in this one case alone is intimidating; sending the mind racing at the implications of it all. The real attraction is that this is not a mindless action game, but that it has been designed to draw the player in with intrigue, get them personally invested in Cole's trials and to make them think about what they're doing in ways no game has achieved before.

It succeeds on all fronts, and this is not purely a result of the believable facial animation, but also the authentic setting, gruesome plot and stellar penmanship at work. They may not be betting the farm on L.A. Noire, but as an untested and unique concept, Rockstar and Team Bondi must be applauded for being so bold. As a lesson in story-telling, few games can hold a candle to L.A. Noire, and a full play through will reveal how well the developers have sustained this feeling throughout the entire campaign.

Emotionally engaging and presented in a raw, bloodied context, L.A. Noire has the makings of a grim masterpiece, putting both its underlying tech and the talents of its ensemble cast to superb use.
Rest
