If you still doubt this is real, gamespot's impressions:
The Bungie representatives made it clear to us that the trailer was running in real-time on the Xbox 360. The trailer is set in the African desert, and it was taken from roughly a third of the way through the game. Cohen noted that the constant battling has taken its toll on Master Chief, and you can see that by the many scars and gouges in his armor. The flashes of Cortana seen in the trailer fill you in on the state of her mind, and the Forerunner structure seen in the distance at the end of the trailer represents a pivotal point in the story.

We next met with Marcus Lehto, Bungie's art director, who filled us in on the technology as he gave us a fly through of the locations in the trailer. The crater seen in the trailer is three miles across, and it's all rendered in real geometry, which means that all of it is actually in the game. Halo 3 has a new global lighting system that now lights everything uniquely from the same source, which explains just how that setting sun looked that good as it illuminated everything in the trailer. Halo 2, on the other hand, used a lighting system that lit everything separately. Meanwhile, parallax mapping is able to give depth to structures in the distance, such as the clouds above the crater. A new particle system offers different levels of light diffusion to take the quality of the atmosphere into account, and that makes for different layers of light.

The demo shifted away from the crater to the part of the level you see the Master Chief walking in from. He was controllable, which means that the trailer is pretty much what the game will look like. Lehto was able to zoom in on the Master Chief with the camera, and you could see the many different ways light reflected objects onto him. For example, you could see light reflect off the ground and onto his armor. A new materials system shows the difference between his armor and the rubber undersuit. It's so detailed that if you bring the camera close to the Master Chief's visor, you see everything in front of him reflected in it, right down to the ammo counter in his rifle.

It goes without saying that Halo 3 looks really impressive. We'll have to wait to learn more, but we'll keep you up to date with any developments.

I just saw Xenos rip its shirt off and strut its muscles. My eyes are bleeding. Someone finally decided to do a ton of geometry and do a lot of high quality shaders. And now we know what Next Gen should look like.

Bravo Bungie.

My guess is Halo 3 will slip to Summer 2007 in lock step with the movie, and GTA4 I guess is coming October 2007, giving them some sales space.

Also for the record the trailer looks noticeably better when you view it on the 360 as opposed to on your pc.

You really get a sense for just how beautiful this thing really is and you can also tell this is ingame stuff. Looking at the road and the rock to the right side right before they show the sign getting blown by the wind. Pretty amazing how they've made it look.... Now imagine how this baby will look in first person mode as you are in the thick of the action. Its easiest to spot as real-time through cortana.

Also noticeable is when that white steam or smoke or whatever it was rolled up the mountain right before parts of mountain started breaking off the way that looked is also a sort of give away, but its nicely done no matter how we look at it. The way the rocks fell also seemed realistic of what you could expect to see in an actual game it wasn't overly complex it was nice and controlled. In general I got my wish for some fancy vertex shader work with a dust cloud GOTTA have that dust cloud or your game isn't next gen :P

I can't stop watching this trailer--you know what's funny? My expectations as a FPS are actually relatively low--I don't expect this to steal away the place in my heart that BF2 holds; but if it can regain the popularity of Halo 2 on XBL--then bungie has done their job..

Personally, I can't wait for the co-op/sp campaign..it's just so freaking..epic.

This..is the way the world ends.

OMFG bungie you know how to hype a product! Haters be DAMNED, Bungie owns--the story rocks, the art rocks--yea he's just a space marine--whatever--look at Mullin's paintings of chief and tell me Bungie doesn't have one of the most talented freelancers EVER working on their side..just..so..good.

why does everybody seem to think that hes holding an assualt rifle, sure the body looks the same but it clearly has a battlerifle barrel at the front. Yes this trailer has to be the best video ive seen with the least amount of things being shown. Music = perfection.

Yeah I know. This shows that they are taking halo back to its roots but upgrading some of the old weapons. This longer barrel shows that the assault rifle that was a bit unaccurate and clumsey, is gonna either be more accurate on full auto or it will have a rate of fire switch.

I loved the design of this weapon. And this upgrade in accuracy will make it the weapon of choice like the pistol used to be.

Or like..the battlerifle was. Personally I am hoping for a rate of fire switch--Give me auto, burst, and single shot please :)

What does this mean?
Q: I spotted an Easter Egg in the trailer after I watched it a few times. How do you explain that?

A: The New Mombasa City Council had an incredibly efficient public works department until and even during the tragic and devastating Covenant invasion.
I am not familiar with Halo lore.

It kinda was, but burst was annoying. There's no need for burst. Give me a choice of full auto and single shot. Plus theres no scope on this one, so single shot might not be needed.
