GSY Review PS4 Xbox One

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will be released at the end of this week on Xbox One and Playstation 4 and what better place to compare both versions than Gamersyde? We've prepared an avalanche of 1080p videos encoded at the usual bitrate and we encourage you to download them to really know what to expect. You'll also find a good number of screenshots (PS4 version only as Blim didn't have time to take any on Xbox One). As you'll see, the game looks even better now (though it'll be old news for PC gamers I guess), and even though framerate isn't locked on either console, it's smoother than on Xbox 360 and PS3, especially on PS4 which clearly benefits from more images per second. That being said, this Definitive Edition should mainly interest those who missed their date with the new Lara Croft last year. As for the others...
Update 2: New videos from the Xbox One versions are up, this time trying (and most likely slightly failing) to match the brightness of the PS4 videos.

I checked out the Enigma X1 video and the Out PS4 video. Framerate differences are clear enough, but it also seems a lot brighter on the X1, IMO less nice looking because of that. Just a brightness setting matter?

I'm shocked the xbone's framerate isn't a rock solid 30fps tbh. Digital foundry recorded lows of 18fps. That's previous gen levels of performance.

Might pick the game up when its a tenner. Should really have been part of the "next gen" upgrade plan imo. Not enough has been improved to warrent full whack.

Looks wise the PS4 version for me takes the cake here. The cave/tomb area looks dark and moody on PS4 video but overlly bright on X1. Funny, usually it's a Xbox version looking too dark etc.

Overall it seems very similar to PC, in no way worth full price.

Why is this even an argument? I just built a $550 PC for a cousin that runs Tomb Raider at 60 FPS at 1080P. The PS4 is a good deal at $399 for a "next gen" console but the Xbone looks more and more like an overpriced turd.

the brightness difference is the same as last gen.. the problem is the setup not the game.

the black will look the same on both console if your TV is calibrated.

the frames.. xbox is constant 30fps bar a few drops where as PS4 scales between 35-60fps.. take your pick. both still look spectacular

A source told Digital Foundry this, so let's not conclude things so quickly...let's wait at least a year i guess:

''Another development source we reached out to suggests that the DX11 'driver' for the Xbox One still requires a lot of work.''

It really wouldn't surprise me if that is the cause of several multiplatform titles running in a lower resolution and in TR's case, framerate.

It's common sense. Or at least should be. The system is struggling with stuff it shouldn't. The hardware has the specs there to run last gen ports relatively without a hitch, or at least should do, and by last gen, I mean cross gen games like this and others. There really shouldn't be any excuses. Something is obviously wrong there behind the scenes. It's obvious the PS4 was a cinch for most devs to just pick up and be accustom to enough for them to get the job done with room time to spare. As you at least should expect.

Looks pretty nice to me. I never played the original, so I might pick this up when I decide to finally get motivated to get a PS4. Still too many Steam sale games I haven't touched and nothing really screaming for me to get a next gen console yet.

Anyway, the effects and everything look nice, but I don't understand the changes to her face. I thought the original face was mature, yet attractive and unique. Now it's like they chubbed her up and gave her huge puppy dog eyes and pouty lips to appeal to anime fans or something. She looks like a teenager now.....just check out the fifth to last pic. Doesn't even look like the same person.

The original face is a lot more appealing. I have no idea why they ruined it for 'next gen'.. Her original face looked more like a real person for various reasons. The new one is just a copy/paste of some generic maxim model or something. Doesn't work.

Even though I feel this "Definitive Edition" don't merit being sold at full retail price, I went ahead and got it. Why? Because Tomb Raider the "Definitive Edition" has the gaming forum world all up in a tissy, for the past week. I had to see what's all the fuss is about. Well....this game looks freakin awesome! I actually like Lara's new face, but more important I love her new ass! I admit, it's no Chloe Frazer from Uncharted 2's ass, but still it's a wonderful ass. I'm happy with my purchase.

I don't know why some people are upset or surprised about the Xbox spanning 18-30fps. Who didn't see this coming?

No software (API, drivers, etc.) is going to fix the disparage here. It's weak hardware and everyone knew it a long time before its release. No one paid attention to the raw numbers. Well maybe next time they will. Specs and numbers aren't everything, but it's at least 80% of it. The rest is up to the devs to learn how to tweak and cheat. You can only tweak so far with software. Xboners might as well get used to these situations. I'm glad I went PS this time around. The Xbox won out for me from 2001 to 2013. R.I.P.

It really seems to be the cell processor of the next-gen, this time for the other console. I hope that this can be improved over time. If devds can find a way to work with it, there even might be some benefits too. But if not...it could mean the X1 versions of multiplats will always be the inferior ones.

Yeah that is exactly it. The face is like some generic model, it looks so off seeing her 'pretty dolled up' face while moving through that water in dirty clothing and what not...just off.

Time will tell to see if its true what you say about the much weaker hardware. When not even a game like CoD and AC4 can be 1080p on the console...something is wrong. I highly doubt this hardware wouldn't be able to do that. Time will tell.

And how much easier do you think PS4 will be to develop for over the next few years too? Bad times ahead for Xbox camp no matter how anybody tries to spin it.
Except the cell processor went above and beyond the 360 as seen in most PS3 exclusives, making the underpowered and easy to develop for Xbox One nothing compared to what the Cell was on PS3 whatsoever.

Also interesting to note that the PS4 & XBO conversions were outsourced to different studios.

I'd imagine developer inexperience may also have had an additional impact here.

Might be an issue but there is not much proof to say either way. I mean anyone who saw the pre-release specs from both console could have predicted there was going to be a difference in multiplats. PS4 is simply more powerful. None of this is particularly surprising. TR isnt a true next gen game at all though, so I suspect with further optimisation it could run better on both systems.

Interesting. Just been watching the IGN PS4/Xbox One comparison video and though the framerate is better on PS4, textures are more crisp on Xbox One and the hair also looks more complex.

Not shocked about that? ;)

PS: correct black-levels in their video
