GSY Review PS4

After completing The Order: 1886 in hard mode in only 8 hours without rushing at all, we can give you our verdict about Ready at Dawn's first attempt at a PS4 AAA title. As usual, for the full review, head over to the French side. If English is more your thing, then join us inside, read the verdict and the +/- summary, and check out our four direct feed videos. If you have questions, keep them in store for this evening's livestream.

Verdict

Simple and entertaining is how we’d best summarize our experience with The Order 1886. It’s bound to disappoint those hyping the game's release but it’s hard to ignore its issues. It’s an aesthetically stunning game that also falls flat thanks to a dearth of content and lack of boldness. By focusing on such a cinematic presentation it feels as if the gameplay often takes a back seat as the game progresses. Had the experience lasted a bit longer perhaps this cinematic approach to design wouldn’t have left such an impression but with so few actual gameplay sequences and little re-playability it does leave us with a sour taste. Yet, despite its flaws and brief run time, we still really enjoyed our time with the game and regretted the sudden onset of the ending. In that sense it almost feels like an extended prologue to a series that may hopefully return for a beefier outing. Hopefully RAD is able to find a better balance between Hollywood and gameplay in the future. For the time being, we'd like to finish with a little cry from the heart: much ado about nothing?
  • On the up side
  • Visually sublime
  • Endearing, charistmatic characters
  • A tightly controlled narrative
  • Interesting universe
  • Immersive atmosphere
  • Aiming feels just right with a DS4
  • The promise of a sequel
  • On the down side
  • Too short
  • Some usability issues
  • Little to no replay value
  • Lacking challenge – even in hard mode
  • Some predictable twists
  • The mechanics play it really safe
  • Soul Reaver kind of abrupt ending

The only review that matters much to me in the media, thanks for this. Seems like they won have the battle, but now need to build on the technical aspects to really address the gameplay shortcommings.

Seems like it's a decent springboard for a bigger and better sequel. As a new IP I can personally let things slip, hopefully they take on board the good and the bad from the reviews and make a strong, Order 1886 sequel. Will still be playing to check it out regardless of the reviews, best to make your own mind up and if it's not incredible, well #firstworldproblems :P

Greetings from Greece! I've been a fan of your site for a couple of months now but today I registered at last. Amazing site with amazing content! Thanks for the review. One question though... If the game runs at 30fps, then how can you upload the videos in 60fps? I also noticed it in the other article with Dying Light where the game run at 30fps on PS4, yet the videos you had where at 60fps.

As Miguel (and Blim, and myself) already explained :
Because if a 30 FPS game with a bad frame pacing is captured/encoded at 30 but the output of the console is 60, some frames can be missing, resulting in frame drops that are not real. We could use some script that detects bad frame pacing and resolve it, but we don't want to, because bad frame pacing results in weird stuttering, so we show games as they are and do not change them. Need For Speed Rivals suffered from bad frame pacing at first, it was patched then. With a capture and video encoding that matches the console's output, there's no problem at all and we show the games as they truly are.
So basically, it's all about the output, and what you see is what you get at home. :)

Thanks for your support!

Finally.
Have been waiting for GamerSyde's Order videos of this. The visual mastery of this game pretty much makes Gamersyde vids the only acceptable option.

Thanks for them, as well as the review / verdict.

not bad for companies first attempt at AAA game, i hope it does well and they expand on what they have already created, to be honest this game is no different from the first Uncharted to me, same length, only minimal re playability, hopefully they get the sort success that Naughty Dog had with there sequel

Good review as always, only site i look at for info, it gnaws me at the flaws but you need them to make better things i always say

Sure, even a bit more would be ok actually provided you know what to expect and you're ok with it. :)

Thanks everyone, much appreciated.

I really love the setting of this game. Hopefully they will take the feedback and do some justice to fantastic atmosphere they have created in this game. I am perfectly ok with the length of the game if its good. Uncharted was not big either and a great game much better than Uncharted2 IMHO. I can't believe why Uncharted2 got a metascore of 96 though lol

MP & co-Op probably, i did enjoy the co-op of u2 though, hopefully they can go same way with the sequel and put in co-op and MP they could have interesting MP wolfs vs humans, would be neat

we need more sites like Gamersyde that don't use that garbage number system

Good review as always. In your verdict, you said it left you guys with a sour taste because of so few actual gameplay sequences and little re-playability, with that in mind, I have 2 questions:

1) Personally, did the game felt to you more of a movie than a game?

2) And do you believe it's worth getting it now at full price or better to wait a few months till it gets half the price?

Thanks in advance.

So wait for The Order 1887? ;)

Hopefully sales are good enough to get a sequel but I doubt it. This gen is all about playing it safe it. Sequels upon sequels for the big franchises.

1) Not exactly, it's like a mix between a Telltale/Quantic Dream game and a more regular gameplay oriented title. The experience is undoubtedbly cinematic, but i wouldn't call the Order a movie.

2) It's hard to say really. The first Uncharted had more or less the same flaws, except it relied more on gameplay. The share between cutscenes and actual gameplay was more appropriately balanced. The problem with The Order is that now cover based TPS have become a little too common, so it doesn't feel fresh. That being said, if you're after atmospheric games, you can probably go for it, but I have no doubts you'll find plenty of second hand copies in a few days/weeks. It just depends on your budget. :)

Again, thanks for the reply. I also read some reviews and I agree with you, unless someone really wants to play it now, it's better to wait a little and buy it second hand for a shorter price.

Still, I really liked the God of War games on PSP, which were made by Ready At Dawn, so I hope they sell enough to earn a sequel.

why not check it out on here? The game main selling point by far is the visuals. Youtube butchers that.

Since it's so cinematic and short, might as well watch it on YT. I would never choose YT over Gamersyde on any gaming videos that are posted here.
