GSY Review Wii U

A few weeks ago, I was tasked with reviewing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and I simply loved the old-school vibe I got from the game. Retro Studios managed to deliver a game that is a joy to play, that looks and sounds as good as you'd expect a HD Donkey Kong Country game to. It's just a shame that there aren't more excellent titles like this one. If you want to know more about what I have to say about the game, head to the French side and read our full review. If French is too much of challenge for you, then make sure to watch our gameplay videos.
Note: As I don't own a 1080p capture card, videos could only be recorded in 720p. If you really want to see some 1080p/60fps videos, ask away. If you're numerous enough, it could convince me to bring the Wii U over at Blim's.

Isn't the game 720p native though?

No idea actually, I thought it was 1080p, but then if it's not, then no need for new videos. :)

Last thing ive read was that its 720p. There were news before that its 1080p but those were shot down soon afterwords saying that its 720p upscaled to 1080p. I dont know if the upscaling makes a difference though.

If it's really not native 1080p then it's not worth making more videos. Anyway, the game looks great in 720p, that's the most important thing. :)

It does look preety clean around the edges for 720p Resolution. My guess is that they are using some sort of Anti Aliasing cause normaly there should be more Jaggies. The 60 fps however realy suits this game well, everything is very fluid.

I agree that Wii U needs a whole lot more great games like these. Maybe at E3? Oh...who am i kidding.

This one is getting mixed reviews though, had not expected that.

Can't get on board with a game that looks like a PSN title releasing at full price tbh. Much like rayman and the 2D Mario bro games. I feel like i'm paying a premium for a game that cost £10 to make (exaggeration)

Unless the game is very long, much longer than a XBLA/PSN title, but i don't know if that is the case. Rayman Origins and i think Legends too are not exactly short games, i'd be willing to pay 45 euros or so for it.

Me and a buddy did about half the first game or so in about 6hrs. It can get pretty challenging, but there's only replay value if you're a diehard completionist. Some of the hardest segments teeter between mind numbingly frustrating and just not fun.

KORNdog, by this point you just have an irrational disliking of platformers. Just ignore and move along, if you don't care. How many comments like that do you need to make every time?

Yes go to Blim's place for that 60fps goodness!

i don't dislike platformers. i bought puppeteer....becasue it was sold at a budget price, as it should be given what it is. same goes for tearaway, and i bought rayman once they both hit £10 (what they're actually worth)

i DO however have a problem with games that look like no effort or budget was put into them, being sold for full whack. these are indie-esque experiences, megadrive quality, games that otherwise would be PSN or XBLA releases, and yet they're asking for the same sort of money they asked for games like last of us or bioshock, or deus ex etc etc. would i pay £40 for say, bionic commando re-armed? no. why is a 2D donkey kong any different?

I'm pretty sure value is entirely relative to what I get out of it, and not what they put into it. And supply and demand.

Never mind that you have no idea what the budget is.

What they're actually worth? That's the stupidest thing I've heard in years. Do you realise more than 80 people worked on Rayman Legend? The game's budget has nothing to do with an indie/psn/xla title. You dont even Know what you're talking about. You're the reason why we're only getting brainless FPS/TPS instead of adventure games or platformers. That's why The Order will probably be nothing more than a Gears of War in London... :/

yeah, becasue my support of titles like beyond, pikmin, wonderful 101, journey, and flower etc are totally going to sway the industry towards TPS's and FPS's...lol. i like to see devs sell their product with realistic price points. that's all. a 2D platformer that is mechanically ripped from the mid 90's doesn't = $60 for me. sony understood the value of the genre with pupeteer, seems nintendo havn't quite got that right...but then what the fuck have they got right this gen...lol

The gameplay mechanics that are used today are ripped from everything that has been released in the past 20 years, maybe you should start your revolution with a boycott of 95% of today's gaming industry.

didn't you hear, i rented games for about 7 years....i think that amounts to about 95% of the games i played over that timespan...boycott done, and done.

Wow you're quite the hero. :)

Now it doesn't change the fact that you seem to know nothing about the industry and the cost of games. Titles like Rayman cost money to make and they can't be sold at $10/15 just because people think it doesn't look AAA enough. We need different types of games and I don't think prices should depend on genres, because if so, there will be a day when all we'll be left with will be the free-to-play option. Not something I want to see personally.

you know of the saying "stack 'em high, sell em cheap" right? rayman would sell more copies if the game was cheaper then selling it full whack becasue the retail price is a saw point for most people. a $20 asking price for a retro style 2D platformer is more then enough. this isn't assassins creed or watchdogs with 900 man teams working on them. they're made with MUCH smaller budgets, and so they should be sold for much less. i wouldn't pay $60 for guacemelee, but $15...perfect for what it is. this is the same imo. if i can't differentiate the quality of work between a $60 retail title and a £10 indie digital release, then i feel like i'm being ripped off with the former.

similar situation with the MGSV demo that's being released with next gen tax at retail. if i can get a digital game that looks better and lasts longer for less money...where the fuck are they getting off charging more for less? if it's brand names? (rayman, metal gear solid, donkey kong)well...fuck em!
