Our videos of Nioh

Our videos of Nioh

When it comes to getting the job done on Gamersyde, things never go according to plan. See Nioh for example, Davton was supposed to take care of the review, so we'd have a verdict and some nice gameplay footage to share, but it took him 3 days to download the game, despite his good Internet connection. Then, when he finally could start playing, he caught the flue, forcing me to take his place, while my sole experience with the genre was the excellent - but probably a bit more forgiving - Dark Souls III. That explains why we don't have much to show you this morning, and we won't be able to answer most of your questions tonight, during our dedicated livestream at 9:15 CET. Hopefully, you'll forgive us, as we really did all we could in the little time we had.

Note: All videos were captured at 1080p on PS4 Pro while the console was set to 4K. We chose to record some footage from the "Action" mode, which takes advantage of a 60 fps framerate, the subtle resolution improvements of the "Movie" mode failing to justify the 30 fps lock in our opinion. As usual, we find the unlocked framerate mode to be quite unpleasant, though some people might not mind.

Thanks for these! I think it looks pretty nice actually. Not as impressive visually as say Bloodborne, but combined with the higher framerate and nice lighting, I think it looks good. A return to form from Team Ninja, and nice to get after many years of rather perverted visual content.

I know early review embargoes are a good thing but it kinda sucks if you know you are already buying a game. The game comes out in a week and there is all these footage out there with some people spoiling everything even in video thumbnails. Re7 embargo was the day before and it was a much better experience because the game reviews well, awesome can't wait to play it tomorrow instead of waiting.

Thanks for the videos. And my best wishes to davton, I hope he gets better soon. Will you play Nioh till completion like Dark Souls 3 or will you stop after covering it for Gamersyde? Good luck either way.

The game is engaging gameplay-wise, but also much more difficult. I can't beat the second boss and it's making me very frustrated. Also, DSIII had something Nioh doesn't have, at least for me: good art style. DSIII made me want to see more of its world, Nioh, clearly not. I like how it plays, but the frustration I feel despite the hours I spent upgrading my character is probably too much for me to take.

Ah, it's cool. If it's more frustrating than fun, then it's not worth playing it. And many Dark Souls veterans have said Nioh is harder than Dark Souls games.

I believe it has to do with the fact that after Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1, many people got used to the Souls games and Bloodborne, so Team Ninja must have wanted to make it more harder in order to give that sense of feeling people got from Dark Souls 1 when playing for the first time.

Add to that the fact it's a Team Ninja game, with Ninja Gaiden's roots all over it, and those games were hard, I have no doubt Nioh is very hard. My only advice, if you decide to take it, is don't push yourself too hard and if you can't progress for now, wait a week or two after the game's release, when the whole community has played through the game, look for tips and then try again. If after this it's still frustrating, then I say leave it for good. Good luck.

PS. I just read this in the EuroGamer review (link below): "Pro-tip: Finding tiny sprites called Kodama offer perks and the ones with white hats make it so you respawn with an added healing elixir. They're well worth seeking out." Maybe it helps.

Dark Souls is also very good at balancing the difficulty making it hard but fair. If a game is just hard for being unfair then it's not as fun.

You know, it might also just be me. The game requires patience, to understand the best strategy. I'm sure the fans will love it.

Like you said it is a good thing and especially for new IP since if a game is reviewing well leading up to its release it will continue to be on everybodies lips, on podcasts, reviews, blogs and so forth.

These days games need to get out of the blocks running, that first week of sales can do a lot to generate momentum. So you just have to try your best to avoid game related media for games you don't want spoiled, which isn't too hard.
