and I fear that there is no real mechanic to driving and that worries me, great concept but I hope they haven't fotgotten that it is a racing game first and anything else second. cars seem to be hitting the walls without much effort I hope the game requires more than just holding accelerate and executing power plays. We need finese in the gameplay like burnout's drift mechanic.

Very true, no matter how good it looks and no matter how nice the explosions are, if the core gameplay isn't really solid then the game will not end up being anything all that great IMO.

I have hopes for this game, but I still don't know why people would be singing it's praises already unless they have played the game. I'm just really hoping for a demo before release.

I've played it. The drifting is fine and accessible. You can hit walls sometimes and a few other things and be okay. It'd probably be pretty rough if you got taken out by super moves AND small collisions. Especially for noobs.
It plays great, so you needn't worry

No, but how hard is an arcade racer to make? The gameplay footage looked right on for that kind of game, just like Burnout but with the addition of the track obstacles.

Because it looks good. I assume you've never said anything good about a game that hasn't come out yet, you casting stones and all, Friedrich.

Calm down, I just thought calling it the "new king" was a bit much. There is a vast difference between saying something good about a game due to impressive videos and calling something the new king of it's genre without having played the game yet.

I remember how great Lair looked in the vids and look how that game turned out...

Having played Black Rock Studios numerous other racers, if Split/Second showed up with lousy racing mechanics, I'd honestly be shocked. Black Rock has been making some of the most solid racers for a while now, so all things considered, they look to be set to deliver yet another stellar racer in Split/Second. And while true it is a little early to be calling it the new king of arcade racers, Criterion did drop the ball with Burnout Paradise (until they patched it, and added tons of stuff to it to actually make it fun), leaving a pretty sizable gap in the racing lanes, for another quality contender to slip right past them, and steal their crown.

Lair looked like jaggied-ass the moment Factor 5 stopped showing CGI of the game and started showing realtime vids. And I was saying that months before Lair actually came out.

Calm down
Calmer than you are.... :)

Where's IRAIPT0IR when you need him? He knows a thing or two about proclaiming a game to be the best ever before it comes out.

In the end, who cares? I'm not going to buy this day one cuz this video, I'm not suggesting or commanding anyone else to do the same. We haven't had a good arcade racer since Burnout and this looks much better than Blur (Mario Kart with real cars and like energy weapons? boring) if you ask me.

Mario Kart? Really?

Also this game LOOKS just as good as these videos if not better. This game is gorgeous on an hd set! I've played it, I have played the game and I am telling you right here.

Also yes, it is better than Burnout and it's easy to say better than Blur too. This is the best arcade racer you will play this year or maybe in the past few years.

I think at one point, someone from either Bizarre Creations or Activision, described Blur as (paraphrasing) Mario Kart for adults.

Until I played the Blur demo, I was thinking more along the lines of WipEout meets Burnout with Project Gotham overtones. And in a lot of ways, I still feel that way about Blur. Just that it, is not as fun to play as either WipEout, Burnout or Project Gotham series.

Well, there is a demo out anyway. Guess it's time to find out if this thing lives up to all this crazy hype. I can already tell the framerate doesn't.

Just played the demo. The framerates solid..no dips... but it really doesnt feel all that fast a game..certainly not compared to Blur.

My biggest problem with this game is that as flashy as all the explosions and destruction around you looks i never really got satisfaction from pulling off the powerplays..it felt far too automatic and detached for me to take evil satisfaction in wiping out the car infront.

The positive of the powerplays though are that it does open up different routs throughout the race..my two full races felt different enough from one another.

Visuals i found abit disappointing..especially with the cars.

I think if i was to pick this up it would all depend on how many tracks came on the disc.. certainly nolonger a day 1 buy for me

That is precisely why I am more interested in this. As long as the racing doesn't suck, anyway. I hate a game where my skill is negated by some guy shooting my in the back. At least with the environment thing you have a chance to escape( maybe, haven't played the demo yet), and others have to dodge debris. That would increase the amount of skill you need, and makes it more interactive. Now, if the environmental stuff only affects one driver, then that would blow.
I also saw a sweet vid of some mode where you have to pass a truck dropping explosive barrels, or something. That looked pretty original and look like a fun mode...
