2K Games announced Spec Ops: The Line during the VGA Awards. It's a third person military shooter, but the location of the game is certainly original. The two trailers available are excellent.
Damn this looks good. Best art style I've seen in a shooter in a long time, hands down better than games like Killzone or Gears of War. Graphics engine maybe not, but art style for sure.
Of course gameplay will make or break this game so without the right balance of that little thing called fun it will be all for nothing. Let's hope it plays as good as it looks.
I am definitely keeping an eye out for this one, reminds me of the beginning of Terminator Salvation when John (Bale) gets off the chopper.
Besides the atmosphere makes it look like "near future" stuff which is nice.
But anyways, good to know one of the videos was all taken from gameplay.
this was probably the best trailer of the VGA's, looks awesome. style looks like every other shooter to me (not sure what Nietzsche was talking about tbh) but the location and atmosphere are awesome. the potential for a really good story is a lot higher then something like modern warfare which is trying a little too hard to be 'plausable'. this just looks like kill.switch meets mad max.
worryingly the series isnt exactly know to be the best and the developers havnt exactly proved themselves to be anything special. hopefully this is their breakout game.
I dont know what Nietzche is talking about either, how can art style be better than Killzone when Killzone 2 levels is much more atmospheric than this.
The art is pretty much your standard military shooter but looks more deserted, SOCOM?

Here is a same concept, desert, sandstorm or whatever, but with better artstyle (thanks to the Helghast and its sci-fi look and background).
I have played this level many times in MP and everytime I am in it the atmosphere just catches me in awe.
But I in no way am saying this looks bad, because of the sandstorm happened in Dubai, it looks post-apocalyptic, kind of like Resident Evil Excinction movie.
LOL I should have known some fucking killzone defense bullshit would come up. I think the "mad max" or even better "terminator salvation" theme to this game looks a lot better than Killzone's overly dark style. Even the daytime levels seem really dark and overcast. This is far brighter and much more open spaced.
But it's all just relative opinion. I don't remember any shooters with skyscrapers being in the middle of a sandstorm. This is more metropolitan looking than Killzone's overly industrial look.
I just really like the way the buildings and sand contrast with each other. I'm not saying the game is gonna be on the same level as Gears or Killzone (though i personally thought Killzone 2 played like shit in many ways), I just really like the terminator-esque post-acolyptic looking destroyed city.
Looks great, seems to have a great athmosphere, very surreal.
Therefore I disagree to one of the posters: Björks song fits perfect. I hope they really get that trailer athmosphere into the game.
Must buy for me!
Nietzche, Dont get me wrong, I respect your opinion to the fullest and I do agree what it reminded you of with the whole Terminator Salvation because that was the first thing that came to my head when I saw it.
Well I love sci-fi in pretty much all forms.
And I agree that Killzone 2 levels like that still looks dark, but its because thats the artstyle of it, it is usppose to be dark and mood, but in terms of how well the level is animated the atmosphere is intense, but ah well.
But yeah, this game reminds me of 4 movies...beginning of Terminator Salvation, Resident Evil Extinction, Mad Max and Soldier (with Kurt Russell when he escapes and there is a huge sandstorm).
Sath, I agree Killzone looks crazy good on a technical level, the indoor lighting in Killzoen 2 is fucking amazing. I just think Killzone's art style somewhat looks odd and almost poor in the outdoor desert levels, due to the, like you said, overly dark art style.
I don't mind Killzone and Gears of war using a lot of gray and brown, I just don't like how DARK those games usually are.
I really like how bright and high contrast this game's style is. I think the destroyed beauty theme works so much better in truely bright sunshine.
Well I enjoy dark atmospheric sci-fi games so maybe thats why I say Killzone's artstyle is good looking, or appealing.
But as I said, considering I like fantasy or/and sci-fi atmospheric settings alot, Spec Ops definitely has that deserted "beauty" in it, enough to make it feel like its some sort of a sci-fi game, which its not, probably around 2015 or something.

Same here ! Art Looks great ! Hope the rest of the game and locations are as creative as this trailer here !
this game looks awesome. fresh setting and some elements like in apocalypse now. the colonel and hopefully enough mature stuff ;) realy looking forward to this and the sand feature also seems to be interesting. this will be the best spec ops game in the series. ok thats not really hard, but for me its the first spec ops game im buying.
damn... thought cause of the american flag and evidence of a destroyed metropolis that it would be a game removed from fiction and into more a mad max scenario - which would of been alot better amongst the wide dollar eye'd signs of "modern warfare" over flooding 2010.

Yeah i think it looks great too... but have you noticed that 2010 seems to be the year of the "bleached out" look? this, bad company 2, medal of honour..all seem to be sporting it.
Refreshing after years of different shades of brown.. if we'll still feel the same towards the end of the year when the game finally hits the shelves will be another matter.

Yep I know what you mean. But I like the overly bright look sooo much more that I am more than happy to have the market saturated with it. Sure it will probably get old after a while, but I think this, bad company 2, and medal of honor all look really great due to how they use this trend.

This game, however, is clearly yellow.
