Mortal Kombat X will be released next week on PS4, Xbox One and PC, and a nice reminder of that fact here is the game's launch trailer, along with a BTS video!
Update: Added the making of (whoops) and also changed the trailer video file to one that should work better on all types of players (quality is unchanged)

It would never be able to move to a "physics based game" if its still on that engine for a start.
Are you asking for a completely new 3d engine? NetherRealms has a contract with EPIC Games's Unreal Engine tech, they no longer do in house 3d engine for fighting games.
Does CryTek and EA/DICE have any competing fighting games using their latest and greatest 3d engines?
Maybe you aren't buying or actually buying fighting games when they release and therefore not helping fund the advancement of the technology development because it costs man hours and money...
The other factor is why Microsoft chose to rush out and by default force Sony to rush out the Xbox 360 and PS3 hardware gen with DirectX 9.0 based GPU hardware instead of waiting until 2007 where DirectX 10.1 GPUs would have been available and feasible...because after all if you go back and read up on DX10 hype you will find that it boasted Geometry Shader which was supposed to handle physics on the GPU and would have pushed physics effects to new levels...
Or you could wait the approximate 3 to 4 years it takes to make and build a completely hardware specific 3d engine to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One...which is likely not gonna happen due to devs citing cost woes.
Gameplay is cool... video sequence sucks imo.
