Video Xbox 360 PS3

PES 2010 is announced as (finally) the return of the king, and it looks like it's at least partially the case. I'll let you decide by yourself with this video.

Bit weird. It seems the human controller gets 360 degree movement but the AI team is locked to 8-way, looks odd. Still the same PS1 animations. And what is with that cross? What actually happened to the ball looked physically impossible given the animation, how does such a small swingback in the wrong direction get the ball there?? And why didn't Henry attempt in any way to adjust his body, instead standing still and thus hitting the ball really awkwardly and very unrealistically?

Animation looks very stiff still, especially when compared to the FIFA 10 video. Also as good as the photo-based player faces look they jar incredibly with the less realistic pitch and stadium.

seems neither gets it right - i thought the fifa video made it look like to players were ice skating/floating, and like slabs says, too stiff in pes.

for me its all about shooting from outside the box - big letdown in last years fifa

Also, no point having photo-realistic player faces with no expressions. Henry scores against Liverpool, and never has anyone looked so indifferent. I'm not sure if his celebration is a version of the robot or if the arm running animations are really that bad.

I don't believe that for a minute. Haven't we been told that "this is the year with the new animations" about each new game for the past 5 years? It's out in 2 months, which means it has to go gold in 4-5 weeks. You really think they can implement and fully test an entire new animation set and get it out of the door completed in a month?

I think they're both looking really good and the player models seem a lot better this time round. Not sure which one I'll buy.

Graphics are fantastic - it's looking easily as good as FIFA. The animations still look incredibly stiff and robotic, but staatsfeind1234 is right; they haven't yet implemented the new animations. You have to remember Zomoniac that the demo as Gamescom isn't the latest build - it's likely to be a month or so old at least. Konami are working on the code regularly, so I'd be surprised if the finished article is like what we've just seen.

Saying that, right now FIFA is getting my money. Although PES 2010 is shaping up to be the best PES this generation so far, it still doesn't compare to FIFA 10.

Oh, and cheers Gamersyde for this and FIFA footage. Much appreciated!

Maybe I was wrong on the animations actually. I've just found out that the demo at Gamescom is from the 80% build, so I doubt the animations would be left out in such a late build.

Hmm, that's disappointing. It's going to be a lot closer this year than it was last year though - the demos will once again decide my choice.

Gameplay-wise, I can barely tell the difference between this and PES 09.

FIFA 10 is just on a whole other level.

It's good to see 2 companies having to up their game each year like this, it shows how good competition can be. I too shall await both demos and make a decision based on them, but chances are Fifa will stay on the ball.

ps. the puns were somewhat accidental if you'll believe that

animation wise fifa looks far superior, graphically PES is better. Can't wait to get my hands on both and make my decision, at the moment I have a feeling I may stick with Fifa!

Me personally, I don't need a demo to decide. Didn't need a demo last year either to know which football game is smoking the other.

As for this video, the graphics have improved. Nice to see. But they've only improved to a certain extent and it's not as drastic as some made out in the media. Faces are great, but that's expected, although they are still very static and this is something Fifa's faces has over that stuck-on-photo look. Graphically, it's hard not to compare to Fifa, and these do hold up, but in no way are they better or even on par. Fifa's visuals better this in every aspect; modeling, lighting, texturing etc etc.

One thing that brings the look of this title right down on top of the fact that you can tell that's it's using an extremely archiac engine, is that the animations are still a joke. I know there could be still time for them to be fixed, but we're told that this build is the latest out there and that the new animations were to be implemented in time for GC. So what's the deal? Are these the new animations that are meant to blow our socks off? If you look at the players walking out and the little cut-scenes, then yes, they do have some new animations there, and I hope for Konami's sake that this isn't what they are talking about.

From this gameplay snippet from such a late build, I can safely tell that this game is getting NOWHERE NEAR Fifa 10, and probably isn't even getting near Fifa 09 nevermind. Sorry, Seabass - nice try, but Fifa 10 is at least two or three years (or more) ahead of this effort. You've improved your game, but it's far, far too little too late now. Fifa 10's trailer blew me away. This did nothing more than ring alarm bells.

Looks decent, still lack of licenses makes for me Fifa10 better than this.

van der Sar's AI needs some improvment :/ and his animations too

See, this is another thing that is killing PES. It didn't hurt it in the past because the gameplay was so good and the only other alternative was an atrociously bad Fifa, but today now that Fifa has superior everything else, plus those licenses, it boggles my mind how anyone who loves football can choose this over Fifa. Even if PES were to catch up in the gameplay department, Fifa would still have all those game modes, online support, and of course the big draw of the official license which should still make any self-respecting fan of the sport choose it over this.

dingleberry, seriously, there is loads of things i hated about last years pes, but only one thing about fifa09 - you just couldnt score 30 yard screamers coz the ball was full of helium. this was unforgivable, and the reason pes edged it for me. fair enough, if this is fixed fifa 10 will be miles better. forget licenses, i want a decent game of footy with stuff i can actually do on a real pitch in it too.

Well I scored a few 30 yard screamers and conceided a few as well. I know what you are saying about the ball ballooning, but this is now gone. It's a thing of the past. And Fifa 09 is not the only game guilty of this. Strangely, when mention PES on the cuttent gen, some people seem to only think that there have only been two previous versions to 2010. There have been 3, and the first game on the 360 arguably had some of the worst shooting in a football game...ever. You want to balloon shots? Go play PES 6 on the 360 then say Fifa 09's shooting was so bad in comparison.

Of course 09's shooting was annoying, but 08's was 5 times worse. However, all the other aspects of 09 blew every other version of PES this gen out of the water, so I don't see how PES could have edged it for you. I picked up the pad to play the demo for PES 2009 last year, and within 20 seconds I could take no more and turned it off. As disgusted as I was having bought 2008, 2009 felt worse, which was shocking. Never again!

PES will have to do something really revolutionary to draw me back to it. It will have to be almost flawless, and to be honest, from the looks of Fifa 10, that game is beating it to the punch regarding those things.

Indeed. So do I. But, time moves and and time distorts views on things. You remember the great times playing old PES and ISS on the SNES even; but play them today and they aren't as great as you remember. It's just the ageing process. What I don't get is people moan about wanting PES to go back to PES 5 gameplay. If they want PES 5, then just go out and buy it and play it in your PS3, or buy a cheap PS2. Fairly inexpensive. But to have PES 5 gameplay as it is with proper next gen graphics just still won't cut it for me. I want physics, I want advanced AI, I want advanced animations and player behaviorisms as well as great graphics. Fifa 10 is checking all those boxes.

*sigh* Konami Soccer on the NES, ISS Deluxe on the SNES and ISS64 on the N64, lost many years playing those greats.

I even now play Become A Legend in PES 2009, because I enjoy playing a part in a team, but that's about the only thing I actually like about it :/ And, sadly, that does include the gameplay itself as well.
