This has huge potential in the future with faster mobile GPU's it will be possible to (in real time) overlay a fantasy/Sci Fi etc. world completely over the top of the real one, but it may be tricky for it to work in public areas without it being potentially dangerous or embarrassing.
I suspect that this kind of devise will be revolutionary (just like VR will be) and useful in other fields other than gaming in the near future.

This demo was eventually found to be fake, a mock demonstration, in other words, 'bullshottery'. Real test drive of the device was proven to be a mixed bag of opinions.

And here is my opinion. It will suffer a similar outcome as Kinect.

the whole VR thing is barely a scratch on the surface. I was a happy owner of the oculus rift DK2, the effect is obviously amazing and the ideas behind VR / augmented reality is obviously the future. Virtual desktop with the DK2 was held down simply by the very poor (in terms of VR needs) resolution of the oculus display, with a great resolution display and enough processing power, nobody would ever need a screen anymore anywhere (at work, at home), you would have infinite screens of infinite size in your VR set.

Same things with games and the demo showed above. But as VR is being developed by many different companies with very different ideas, none of them yet produced anything really revolutionary. This is what I mean with 'scratch the surface'. They try to impress with weird new stuff that is maybe 'WOW' in the first 5 minutes, then you notice how it actually proves and serves nothing. When a kind of balance will be achieved by the companies and a certain hardware level (processing power in home computers, resolution in the VR-set displays) reached, then we will maybe be able to set VR as a standard.

For the moment, it seems that everybody is trying to do the craziest useless thing to try to impress viewers, instead of delivering a satisfying device with a well developed software.

It seems so. GameSpot had an impression article on how it was used for Halo 5 at E3 and they were impressed and praised it. It seems it was being previewed on how it could be used for tournaments. Given more time this could actually be revolutionary for games like star-wars and Mass effect and so on which holographic images and displays.

Well he's not entirely wrong. Go read detailed hands-on impressions. Verge and Engadget come to mind. There are limitations that Microsoft is not clearly representing in their scripted stage demons. Those demos may be based on real technology, but they are not "real" demos. Version 1.0 is never getting a field of view that's much greater than "viewing an iPad at arms length," and the user interactions were scripted too.

And sure, several kinect stage demos were also scripted, because live demos are hard. That did not stop people from being impressed with the real HoloLens prototype. I'm very confident in this technology, and I am excited about HoloLens, but their stage demonstrations are somewhat misleading. And they're obviously embellished.

They should be more transparent if people are going to accept the demos at face value.

I agree with the potential.. although I love how little augmented reality is represented in science fiction. This is going to be a BIG part of the man-machine interface in the future, and it wasn't really predicted by sci-fi. The profits kinda missed this one.. and it's a biggie!

I can't wait to see Magic Leap too.
