The poor Halo 3 ODST has not made a strong impression at E3, drown in the middle of a tsunami of potential hits. And it's not with these three new screenshots that Bungie's new game will seduce us.

Bumpmapped metal plates with a lot of bloom. This is what defines Halo 3 for me. I really want to play this actually. I'd be glad to get all the dust off for this one.

halo 1 covenant ships were way cooller

sweet Firefight screens (because of Sgt. Johnson) and I can't wait for this game/Add on.

I always wanted a game mode like GOW2's Horde in a Halo Game. And I have to say that the graphics are still sweet (love the lighting effects etc.).

"Es ist Hammerzeit!" @ screen 3 :D

BTW, the Dropships never changed ;) In the books the "Phantom" existed even during Halo 1. They just look cooler than a "Spirit" (the dropships from Halo CE).

Even though these are bull shots they still look terrible...I can't believe they didn't make a single engine improvement at all...

Why would they bull-shot a game that we've already seen the primary engine for? It doesn't make sense.

These shots may not wow, but it's Bungie, the game is pretty much guaranteed to play awesome. And both Firefight and the open-world "stealth Halo" main quest sound cool.

My only real concern is campaign length. Map pack or not, Bungie is going to get a lot of hate if the campaign is noticeably shorter than Halo 3's. Saying Firefight makes it worth it is like saying Gears 2 should have been half as long since it included horde mode. For full price, I still want a decent campaign.

Funny, because it's the most wanted game in all the polls of E3. Looks like beggars (p00r, lol) can be choosers.

These are taken from the in-game video editor, all screenshots you take in that mode are anti-aliased. The only bullshot about this is the lack of jaggies.

The reason people hate is because now its cool to hate Halo, even though most of the people saying it doesn't look that good alreadyhave it pre-ordered. The game looks excellent, and saying that it did poorly at E3 is about as ignorant a thing as a journalist could say. It did very well. All of what I have heard from IGN, Giantbomb, and plenty of other sites is good things. And I think if anythign really took any steam out of ODST's E3 presentation, it was Reach. ODST has been out there for a while, but they haven't shown anything concrete. People had been wanting it for a long time, so it was a big deal when they got it.

They have no reason to. The engine looks great. It lets you have big draw distances, LOTS of stuff blowing up, great textures, lots of detailed mapping, and a nice style to boot. Besides, how often do you see the framerate drop below a nice steady frame rate, outside of forge? Not terribly often. The fact is the engine looks great. And they are making improvements, already the faces look a lot better. And there are things you probably wouldn't notice without a side by side comparison of with and without. Plus they will ALWAYS be tweaking performance, which is certainly not shown in screenshots. The game may not look like Crysis, but for its age, it looks damn good. And it has style, which is more then Crysis or Gears of War can say.

It is an expansion, and pricing will doubtfully be full retail. It doesn't have to be, and isn't supposed to be, as long as a typical game. Because it isn't a game, it is an expansion.

Like it or not, MS has spoken, this is full $60. Their defence? The disc will also include all of the DLC maps we've seen so far + 3 new.
I'd be damned if the majority of halo 3 players don't already own ALL of those maps, and I see absolutely no point in not releasing the ODST campaign as a standalone DLC alongside the disc. It's either the ripoff or nothing. Us customers get no options.

The game looks serviceable...but really considering the massiveness of the franchise, it is pretty weak graphically. They should license cryengine 3... They need to create a new engine for the next game, its far behind the standard these days

Halo went downhill after the first one. I've fond memories of halo ce. I can't even remember most of the second and 3rd although multiplayer was good. Assault on the control room ahhhhh such a good level I'd rather play that level for the 100th time then halo odst

There's just too much wrong with this comment.
1. Yes, it's cool to hate halo, but that doesn't mean that everyone who hates it is just trying to be cool. And no, haha, I don't have it preordered.
2. What? How can you say that ODST wasn't overshadowed?! Seriously, check all the E3 headlines. Most of them are about Project Natal, PS3 Wand, Metal Gear games, the next Racing games, and a load of other big titles. ODST AND Reach were only a notch above Super Mario Wii on the E3 hype scale in my opinion... fuck it, even Alan Wake was above Halo.
3. Halo's "style" is lame. The original Halo had style. The sequels have some nice touches, but overall it's uninteresting to me.
4. No, the graphics do not look nice. The engine does not "look great."
5. Gears of War doesn't have style? Are you kidding? Are you suggesting that it's meant to look realistic? Fair enough if you don't like the style, but it definitely has style.

No offence, I just really don't agree with anything you say in this comment.

Lets face it, even me as a halo fan have to say that compared to other games, it looks like crap. The gameplay may be good again but it DOES NOT look even a little good. gfx are below avereage if you ask me...
Its build on an old engine that wasnt spectacular when Halo3 arrived.
Yes it has some good draw distances but seriously EVERYTHING has such a poor poly count...

Personally, I probably buy it, but hell saying that it looks good is wishthinking.

If you are a gfx-hoe, then wait for Reach. It will have a new engine...

P.S.
Why do devs never keep their promises?
They should have stopped making Halo games after Halo3!

Don't ignore the lighting and AI. Most shooters these days (GoW, Killzone 2, Uncharted, CoD,...) do have better character models, full 720p and AA these days, but they are also corridor-like cover-shooters with minimal AI where enemies sit behind cover and just pop up every few seconds like stupid targets while Halo 3's enemies behave dynamically in big environments. Also most other shooters just look grey-and-brownish while Bungie sacrificed 720p and AA on pourpose to get high dynamic range lighting (dark and bright objects can coexist on the same frame)

No matter how great the gameplay is, you can't deny that Halo 3 and now this game looks absolutely disgusting. Especially taking into consideration this is such a high profile franchise, it's really embarassing imo.

That said, apparently it doesn't need even above average graphics to become one of the best selling games around...I think that says enough about the game's other qualities (which all lie in the MP component imo)...

I don't care what an engine does technically, in fact I don't care.
I want a game to look good and if the engine spends too much power on the "wrong" things, imo its not a good one...
