Electronic Arts released these images and artworks of Dante's Inferno, as usual quite a bit strange conceptually.

It is obviously not gonna be like NG considering thats the only one that uses more of a stradegic combat system with timing and block alot.
Like droezelke said, they deliver (EA Sherwood now known as Visceral Games) Dead Space, so I have faith.
All I can do is hope that they show up next month at E3 with gameplay footage (along side with Lords of Shadow from Konami)!
Damn I love this genre, top of the list in gaming for me, unfortunetly, its lacking. I hope that the 3rd person action hack and slash genre picks up fast and start coming in from Japan like it did with PS2!
But when one comes out they mostly suck one way or another (mostly the combat or not enough combos and variety) and usually its from western companies.
PS. I read the write up of Dante's Inferno on Wiki, love the concept.
PS. Dante's uses the Scythe as his primary weapon, it is gonna be very difficault to beat Ryu Hayabusa in NG2, that guy is just brutal (my favorite character of all time).
Graphics are awfull though, there aren't even subtle hints of the awesome artstyle the first CG trailer showed...
looks to have some big boss battles
So from my view, I am giving Dante's Inferno a big hope that it might turn out very good, even though its a God of War rip off, which I don't mind.
As soon as they release the first gameplay footage with actual gameplay combat it will show how good it is.
Here is a tip from someone who loves of hack and slash games as a religion
-Weight to the weapon and character/s.
-Fluid and smooth animations and transactions.
-Hit detection and enemy reaction when the character attacks with the weapons.
-Visual effect perfomance and sound to deliver that extra "visceral" punch to the attacks.
-Many combos (and weapons depending on the character).
Those 4 are probably the top things that makes the combat of a hack and slash good along with various weapons and combos.
Combos should have alot of variety so you can mix and match anytime.
Considering Japan are always into weapons with blades, magic/spells, exagerations, visual effect, thats why they pretty much always deliver in their hack and slash games within the combat one way or the other.
NG and DMC titles are the perfect example of this.
Wen a game like GOW and Wolverine comes out and I see how the combat and controls are, I get surprised because its from the western companies and they usually don't get close to hack and slash games like Japan does, or did (so far we haven't gotten much) and even if they do, they usually suck.
I hope PS3 gets as much love with 3rd person action hack and slash from Japan like they gave PS2. Maybe not now, but soon or in the future, and something tells me that is what is about to happen.
Your combat list is spot on. That's why NG 1 & 2 are a couple of the best hack n slash games ever made. Itagaki was the man! Wonder what his next project will be...
I would imagine the team would be occupied making Dead Space 2, not this game

And yeah indeed, I agree with you.
It is like fighting games, big gap until something new shows up.
NG is still my favorite one because thats the only one I know that takes stradegic approach to the combat with incredible huge combo list with great amount of weapons to choose from (can't wait for NGS2!)
Damn FPS games are taking over, thats why I have to rely on Japan to wake up soon to make something, which they will over time.
But Itagaki was the director of the NG games, but TN was also there were Hayashi was his "Robin" to say.
But with Itagaki gone, I hope Hayashi makes more NG games or NG-ish new IPs.
Hayashi said that they love NG, so my guess is they will continue :)
EDIT: ah, it was on Eurogamer, here's the quote from games executive producer Jonathan Knight:
" I do want to clarify that while many people who worked on Dead Space are working on Dante's Inferno, it would be more accurate to call the team the "Dante's Inferno team" than the "Dead Space team". But we are working down the hall from each other, share the same technology and central resources, and collaborate on lots of things. "
So it's not one on one the exact team but close enough. Just kinda weird that the game looks rather rubbish compared to Dead Space...Maybe EA just want's to show the game early.
