They are a little behind in Japan on the xbox-side. Usually it is the other way around.

Japanese don't want to play no stinkin' gaijin games.
I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an *******. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

It could be the huge amount of Text that those two titles contain, the translation must be incredibly time consuming for companies.

Exactly!

Imo the reason that most of the Japanese devs suck soo bad in the tech department is that they sticked to long to the PS2...

They are still excessivly developing PS2-exclusives. Sure, that system still sells pretty well in Japan, but damn the hardware is almost prehistoric.
I cant remember one single Western developer who released a PS2 or Xbox exclusive after the "next-gen" consoles launched...

What the fuck? Is this guy for real, or just delusional? :D
What he hell does honor and shame have to do with stupid console games, mister self-proclamed expert? Wow the people you find on the internet.. lol

They have McDonalds in japan, they have coca cola, they have english printing on many of their beers and even the signs around their cities.
They dont "loose honor" just because they play a friggin foreign game rofl.

Mods, why aint he banned yet?
Right under the comment box it clearly states that Trolling will get you banned.

As I am Japanese XBOX fan, I and many others have been waiting so long for Mass Effect, and as you say, the translation process took huge time (although I didn't have to wait for Japanese version). Another reason why Mass Effect was delayed was simply unrewarding the effort. Very few of us play western RPGs, whereas those require so much work to localize (this is also the case with Oblivion, Fable, etc). By the way, Oblivion part on the video is just an Japanese version of Shivering Isles, which also took long.

GoW2 is just announced to be released in Summer, but the main reason for the delay was its gory rendering (GoW1 was released in Japan 2 months after US). Obviously there will be many censorship, and our main concern is how much it will be twisted (even Maria's death scene can be lost).

@ jesuschrist. Dude I don't think the whole FFXIII on 360 ordeal was big enough to become a meme. You lost half the thread with that paragraph and made yourself look as ridiculous as the guy who wrote it.

I don't think it will give it a huge boost in sales, but it should help a little as long as these rpgs turn out good. I'm glad they're getting Mass Effect finally.

Cool to have a english-talking japanese guy here. So, how do you compare let's say westers RPG game like Mass Effect, compared to a japanese one like Lost Odyssey, or even something more "japanese" in style (the caracter design in Lost Odyssey is kinda western looking, but gameplay and story is more traditional japanese, at least in my eyes =).

I personally who have been playing japanese and western RPG's for a long time, thinks that w-rpg's are superior, although I always will love a bunch of j-RPG's for their story and design, but dialogues, options, character development, level design, and yeah most things is better in a game such as Mass Effect.

What's your opinion on this matter?

wouldn't work if they didn't do the menu translations and subtitles at least, would it?

But it's a really cheap move what square and namco are doing, releasing SO and Tales for the US as if its the only important market, and making Eurotrash like myself wait 6+ months. Wake Up! I'm gonna play in English too, motherf***ers, do you speak it?!

And not being region-free, of all things to be also, jesus.

Yes, you're right. JRPGs are basically inferior now (I guess whole Japanese game market is). There used to be tons of great JRPGs back in '90s, but as you see western RPGs are way better in graphics, battle, and even storytelling. Most Japanese who doesn't play WRPGs don't talk about the difference so much or simply don't notice it (or become angry), but they somehow feel it. Square-Enix releases so many remakes or ports from their legacy library, and consumers buy those every time. How ridiculous if you buy every edition of DVD or VHS of classic movies rather than new one, but that's what is happening here.

The way they play RPG is also similar to watching a movie or reading a novel, rather than playing the game. Japanese gamers want it to have cool & cute characters, beautiful fantasy graphics, and good storytelling (shame that is almost gone.) and "easy-to-proceed gameplay", that means weak enemies along the main story, and very linear path (removal of freedom). That's why WRPGs don't make big sale in Japan, since it is so much like "GAME" , and it is not from Japan (I think if Square-Enix sells Oblivion and Mass Effect as their own title, Japanese gamers would blindly buy those).

>>jesuschrist
Yes, language doesn't matter. They work as long as the region is free.

Interesting view on it all. Nice to hear what it's like on the other side.

Normally I just think about all the time it takes for Japanese games to come over to Europe, never realised it was the same, if not a lot worse the other way round.

Still, good to see you finally getting some of the best we have to offer. Shame you're getting X-Blades though... nobody wants that.

Well thats all opinions. I find WRPG bland and boring. Mass Effect and the KOTOR series are the only ones that I like.

X-Blades is the same story as I mentioned. The characters are much more like our favor, and Japanese localization is so great (Ayumi's voice actor is very famous and talented). Maybe you can't imagine the importance of voice quality in Japanese market. Of course we know the game itself sucks, but there are some amount of people who are willing to step a visible land-mine.
The game value changes through the localization like better voice acting than original, or so many typo like "I feel asleep!", and X-Blades got better.

>>Drsw36
I agree in terms of gameplay and graphic favor, that's the same story in both side of the world. But I really think that WRPGs are better in overall quality.
