Xbox 360

After a rather disappointing Infinite Undiscovery, quite a few of us hoped that Tri-Ace would get their tech together and would release a stellar looking Star Ocean: The Last Hope like expected from people who managed to do some almost magical stuff with the PS2 hardware. Well, I'm sorry to say that this isn't really the case. While the game has some quite nice lighting effect, the aliasing is always in the way and the image resolution during fights is simply unacceptable. What happened here? How did Microsoft even accept this? Anyway, the game itself still seems to be a quite good action-RPG, so enjoy this video showing the first 10 minutes of the game (Japanese version), with as usual quite a lot more to come in the next few days and weeks.
Update: Added a second part, starting a few minutes after the first one (long dialog in Japanese).
Update 2: Third and last (for the moment) part is up. We'll start over next week with the US version.

That's too bad. I will probably still pick this up, but it would be nice to see a JRPG come out this generation that is genuinely more than just a "solid game".

There have been a few I've certainly enjoyed (such as Lost Odyssey), but it seems like there's always some niggling factor holding them back.

I think it's just crazy the extents some people complain about upscaling in games. Lots of games are lacking visually on one area or another...

Based on videos and shots, I think Star Ocean 4 looks amazing. The art design is a little off, almost like they intentionally made the characters look like puppets, but from a 'flashy' standpoint it really pops out.

How bad is the aliasing? It looked fine in some image grabs.

Its a sad day when we degrade a game solely on aliasing or graphics. Ive been playing this game for 2 days now and its brilliant. Most area's are beautiful, but more importantly it has a great plot and is incredibly fun when it comes to fights.

hasn't it pretty much been the story of this gen to talk only about graphics? for what its worth, SO4 was still made on the IU engine, so it was perhaps expecting a little too much to expect it to be leaps and bounds better. they've likely barely had time to make any significant tweaks to the engine.

Why does every comment that doesn't glorify the game qualify as a damn attack on the game? Blim even says that it's a good action rpg only the graphics are not quite what one would have hoped. It's a sad day because we have standards in graphics? Well buddy, why don't you grab your old atari and start whacking away at Advanced D&D and we'll see how you like it :P

Ive been playing the sega collection as well over hte past few days and loving every bit of it. As for the atari days, I enjoy a good game of frogger over most of the new titles as well. Its not really a matter of age, for me its a matter of whether a game is fun to play or not. Reading what was written here seems like a general negative tone, hence the reply. One aspect of an rpg does not bake a negative game. I got the vibe he is disappoitned with it solely based on 1 graphical aspect, something i disagree with. I wouldnt expect glowing praise, but id expect more than "the aliasing is terrible and its not a gem"

That said, to each thier own. dont really care if others hate or love it as long as I appreciate it. Its just entertaiing to see others opinions.

Well I skimmed over the review in GI and it turns out the game is every bit as generic as I expected, but once I get the time I'm sure to rent it, if only for those glorious mammaries.

Yes and even the suckiest games today by far outshine the old "classics" by miles, but people don't recognize that because of the stupid idea that older is better. You exchange quality for nostalgia and don't even realize it. Frogger is a game totally without substance compared even to the most dreadful garbage games made today.

But whatever, if there is a lot of jaggies and the game is upscaled a lot, i can't help but think it's worth mentioning. Especially since one of the big things about this game has been just that - graphics.

Upscaled or not, sure they could probobly have made this game run at the correct resolution, But no they desided it to run at a lower resolutions, LIKE MOST GAMES OUT THERE TODAY.

On other hand the game runs in 60 FPS, wich is something VERY rare for todays games, it's a complete different feel when a game runs this smoth, and I sure noticed it as well with SO3 as it was also one of the rare games running at 60 FPS on PS2.

--

broman back then games where not bad because of graphics, but because of gameplay, there is on other hand MANY GOOD games from back then belive it or not, and the grapihc part is irelevant on that regard. And you know, you don't even need to look that far back, just look at eg PS2 games and you whill probobly scare yourself how terrible some games look but are a lot of fun to play.

Today however, it's always been an standard about graphic is the NUMBER ONE THING if a game is good or not... this is just gone way to overboard, but personaly I'm just gonna say this once as I said before SO3 was the most fun PS2 game I ever played, this use the same system, for me it cannot be bad even if now the graphic acording to most is terrible.

Hmm, that's strange. I don't see any ailiasing problems(looks quite good IMO), but rather some strange effect that must be caused by the scaling. It's occuring at regular intervals, and is pretty destracting....

Reminds me style-wise of Crimson Sea, quite liked that (though obviously different genre, before *I'm-right-you're-wrong-finish-him* begins).

It doesn't look bad, I just think people expect too much nowadays.

Don't worry Chewy, I think we have a potential candidate for quickest ban (doesn't Synce still hold that record?)

:o)

It's good that BlimBlim mentions about the graphics. The rather 'low' comments in his direction proove that many people anno 2009 are used to some form of degraded graphics and are willing to ignore this technical aspect. This is what lazy devs want you to think: "It doesn't matter, it's all about gameplay". Yes, gameplay is alpha and omega, I agree on that. But consider this: would you buy a car with only 3 wheels, would you buy a house without windows? Is it so weird than that people like BlimBlim REPORT this to the public. Isn't it in fact a duty to inform people as complete as possible. Whether you don't care about bad graphics or not, BlimBlim cares about informing you of ALL aspects of the game. That's why Gamersyde has become what it is.

The battle sim part looked blurry/jaggy but inside the ship it looked fine. IMO, JRPGS are not technical masterpieces by nature anyways. They focus far too many resources into the cutscenes and 'gameplay'. Not my genre I suppose, but I try to keep an open mind.

Im not saying it isnt an issue... but I really dont appreciate on that video a great big deal of aliasing or resolution problems O.o It is nothing technically impressive but it more or less shows the same kind of graphical problems I´ve been seeing in most console games lately.

Got my copy this morning, I'm playing on a 94" screen and there are very few moments where there are a lot of jaggies, a bit of shimmering here and there in cutscenes, true the battle simultor looks like crap but what do you expect when you have such bright colours set against a black background.

The character models in cutscsnes and some of the shader effects are really nice as is there lighting, I am a little disappointed thats its not all 1280x720 but you hardly notice it half the time, after seeing videos of the later stuff with so many effects going on it's pretty obvious why they halved the resolution in battle.

I think your being overly critical Blim :)
