Snoopers had one last Fable 2 video available, this one showing the combat system in action. And with this video, I can finally go get some much need sleep!

Also, the dog isn't meant to replace the mini-map, that is what the bread crumb trail is for, it will lead you to your next target or quest. The dog, however, will lead you away from that trail to new areas, treasures, etc...

no. watch the GDC fable2 dog videos, there on youtube. recorded GDC 2007.
peter talks about how the dog is to replace the mini map.
theres ALOT of footage, and there is not a single mention of any 'bread crumb trail' and this footage is over a year old now. i'm guessing a year later they have realised the dog isnt sufficant enough to guide the player on its own

i'd prefer just to follow the dog to the quest location.
i dont like having things on the screen that make the world look less believable if that makes sense...

That makes perfect sense and is kind of the reason we're getting so many hudless/reduced-hud games.

Now that we have the whole dog and bread crumb issue out of the way, is there any new news on the co-op?

yeah man, must be, i think its a step in the right direction. sometimes i think devs forget that they have a choice to include a HUD. sometimes i think they must forget and feel like they have to add one for it to be a videogame because they all seem to have them. i guess they are useful for some game, but not so needed in others.

and actually another thing i'd love to get rid of in fable 2 while im ranting is the orbs. i cant stand them. why does there have to be orbs to represent the experiance anyway? it should just add onto your expeiance when u kill someone, without having to collect any orbs. its just looks kinda ugly when the screen is covered in bright shiny colourful orb things. and now along with the orbs you have a bright yellow brick road. and a flashing L1 button to show you to look at something. its just too much stuff taking away from the immersion.

i dont wanna sound like im moaning, even though i am, but for good reason. im moaning about this becasue lionhead have made such a beautiful and amazing looking game world its such a shame to cover it with so much clutter!!

I think the moaning will stop once you actually play the game. Naturally it'll still be there, but you'll find out that everything works out nicely. Yes, the crumb trail is a bit silly, but I'm sure you can toggle it on and off. And I'm sure it won't be that big of a distraction as you're making it out to be.

I for one actually like the orbs. Sure having the experience just add up would be fine, but there's something about the orbs that I enjoy. I believe it adds to the fantasy world that is Fable.

Don't knock it 'til you experience it.

I don't really expect too much from any video game anymore, maybe that's why I'm optimistic about the whole thing. I'd just like more news on the co-op. Which I don't think any has been released.

it would just be my personal preferance.

i know the games gonna kick arse i have faith in it, and in peter.
your right aswell when im playing it im sure it wont be as bad as im making it out to be now. its just hard when you get so excited about it yanno... makes you really want it to meet expectaions...

You mean the news that there is going to be two-player online co-op play (besides offline, of course)?

There is one main thing that bugged me about Fable, and I had hoped they would fix it for fable 2, but I think not, judging from the video. That is that it is way too easy to accidentally hit and injure friendly NPCs (in this case, the dog) while in combat. Fricken happened to me all the time when they jumped in between me and the guy I was trying to kill. I see another potential problem this time around with the area-effect spells. The dog gets hit with them constantly. I also saw a couple of times when the dog gets hit with the pistol on accident.

While this may add some realism to the game, it makes the game so much more of a chore (at least for me).

psicotic thats a very good point ^

just reading your comment brought back terrible memories of escorting a small child out of a cave full of hobbes on fable 1... urgh, that was SO ANNOYING.

hopefully they will fix that before they release
thing is, they are probobly playing and demoing the game in god mode so they wont notice how annoying would be. hopefully they have competant testers that will bring up the issue though

Talk about overreaction ... mass effect could be completed in under 10 hours but it took me 33 hours on the first playthough then 24 on the next

People need to watch the demos if you save up that 1 million gold you can buy the castle this opens up a whole new story arc about defending the castle from attacks and discovering secret tunnels of course thats not part of the main story... i noticed you can even buy houses and rent them out and become a property tycoon

Thats not even thinking about the other hundreds of houses you can buy and open up other storylines..

From the comments from the guys on the 1up podcast the game delivers on its promises and they said its looking great, they said the combat works very well (one button for sword, one for guns, one for magic)

You can even train your dog to help in combat

Yes, just watch some of these interviews with peter where he demonstrates everything. The map of Fable 2 is 10 times bigger than the originals, but there are also caves and dungeos underground.

What I like the most is that everything you do has consequences. Peter was asked if you can have multiple wifes and he said: If you can take the consequences. That means that if your wife discovers this she'll take half of your assets/money with her, which is quite harsh.

This is one of many things that a lot of devs say that really pisses me off because they pretty much never deliver on it to the degree that they'd like us to believe. I'm really looking forward to Fable 2 as I really enjoyed the first one, but I really doubt a lot of this consequence talk will be present/matter at all.

anyone can say that 12 hours isnt enouf but if youv played fable(one) then you shuoldnt be complaining the story for fable1 is exeptionaly deep especially when considering fable 1 doesnt have much more than a few hours of sidequest while fable2 has basicly the whole storline(10-12) game worth of sidequest plus dabbling in silly thing that just add to the depth of the game like playing with your dog getting married or buying plenty of house/castle/dungeons co-op and a endless supply of new and unique armor and weapons plus iheard you can do thing like make your own sword henchmen even pick out furniture to waste time on. i estimate this will make fable i beleive will make at least 25-50 hours long even thou i plan to spend about 60-100 hours a profile fable 2 will be the game of the year without a dout

Just to reciprocate a bunch of what's already been stated:

Mass Effect (the epic adventure of a lifetime [read: garbage]) could be beaten in 8 hours. Most people on first play through spent 20-30. Same will go with Fable II. 12 hours translates into 30 easy because of 3 things I can think of off the top of my head:
1. Going ga-ga for bloom! I'll spend hours looking at scenery.
2. Helping out beggars/buying houses when I go into towns. Bartering with the local smithy, getting a job early to help me get money before I progress on the main quest.
3. Women.

Also, the combat looks incredible! The way they've streamlined it yet also made it overall more fluid. My one concern is the parry system when in melee combat. It didn't look like the person controlling the Hero in the videos had any control whether he parried or swung with the one-button system. I would REALLY want that control because that became the challenge for me in Fable:TLC.

I have done a run through in that game without getting hit in melee combat at all. By means of avoiding, parrying, or not letting the guy get a swing in, it's possible. I would love to be able to master Fable II combat with that amount of control as well, unfortunately I don't see that happening. Otherwise the combat looks INCREDIBLE! Channeling Magic looks awkward but that'll get smoothed out probably.

Did I mention the scenery looks radically beautiful? Even with all that bloom that game looks NICE!

Looks great. Shame that the game isn't all that long but it's one of those one's you can replay and have a different experience. You then also have the whole social thing in the game world, such as creating a family and buying properties. Add online co-op and I think you've got a game long enough to keep most busy until Gears 2 is released.
