PC Xbox 360

Our friend m0dus sent us word of a new trailer of the game he's been working on on his spare time since a few months now, called Last Alarm: The Argus Complex. This is done using XNA and will work on both PC and Xbox 360, and for a game done by non professionals it sure doesn't look bad.

Hmmm is this a free game or will it be sold on XBLA or something? Because it doesn't look 'buyably' good.

Also, what's with the NeoGAF logo in the end? Not like the forum made the game, just one guy from it.

quite a well done trailer, but what is it with every other game made with XNA being a scrolling shooter

Professional or non professional, with these types of games the line is quite blurred. If you manage to pull a group of competent people together making a smaller game project with rather high standard shouldn't be a problem. It looks good though, i hope it will be fun, it's always ncie with a good shmup!

Seems like it cuts off at the end there, but nonetheless, NeoGAF delivers!

Take a look at Omega Five on XBLA. Still seems like a big difference to me.

A lot of the 'non-pro' games that go retail are usually made by people who got a lot of experience at some large company (for example Lionhead studios -> Rag Doll Kung Fu -> Little Big Planet).

Jigen: I actually think that Omega Five is an atrocity. While the graphics are alright the design is horrible and i don't think it was very good for a shoot em up either. The quality of a title isn't always decided by the sweetest 3d gfx, particularly not with these types of games.

Well there's no accounting for taste. The game is great, the character design might not be excellent, but everything else is. Just because the game has great graphics doesn't mean the gameplay and design isn't great too.

Anyways, the subject game's video looks very slow paced, and not especially interesting to me.

Jigen: Omega Five, wasn't that this two-dimensional side-scrolling shmup with 3d-elements in the background of which you couldn't find out whether they are attacking you or just decorate the background?

Anyway, this looks good. Professional really, except the trailer shows more of the game- and development logos than actual gameplay. I'm not sure if I would buy this - there are so many games like this on Xbox Live Arcade. It's a sad thing Geometry Wars invaded Arcade in first place, every single action title looks just like it. C'mon developers, how about some inspiration?

No, it was pretty easy to tell the difference between background elements and gameplay ones, actually really well designed in that way. The majority of the enemies came from the sides of the screen anyways.

Either way, I've never heard anyone complain about the gameplay elements of Omega Five at all, please don't put down that game because you want to argue that this one looks good.

I disagree that it looks very professional, it looks like a well made user game. The trailer shows TONS of CG art (which looks like it's from 1995), there's a lot of professional titles that show more gameplay...

What other Arcade game looks like Geometry Wars?

This is not a race between Omega Five and Last Alarm, Jigen. I just wanted to state I didn't really like Omega because I couldn't really separate background-animations from enemies. I'm certainly not trying to dislike Omega Five to live up to Last Alarm.

What Arcade game doesn't look like Geometry Wars? In terms of controls, many do. Just look at the list of action games released where you have to control a vehicle with the left stick and shoot with the right one...

Just shooters right? Personally I think the multidirection control is a good thing, but Geometry Wars didn't originate that by far. Robotron 2084, and Berzerk before that did very much that, and they're some of my favorites of all time.

If I'm not mistaken, the only NEW SHUMPS on XBLA right now are Aegis Wing and Omega Five. I wouldn't begrudge a game that kind of control at all. If being unoriginal is doing things right, then there should be less 'original' games.

It's also sad that Omega Five has sold as poorly as it is, with as great of a game as it is. Better than most SHUMPS by far, and the greatest one in quite a while, yet people didn't buy it. Basically I'm just annoyed at anyone who would pass on Omega Five and buy something like this game instead.

Nice looking game. There is always room for one game like this :) Asteroid level looked graphically really nice. There is potential that this game could be great. I have to just wait and see if there is demo or something to test it myself.

Couple of things:

1) this game is made be two people on the neogaf Forum-- me and Ghost
2) it will be for PC and, if we get the chance, xbox 360. It will be FREE. We this is a learning experience for both of us, and we couldn't think of trying to charge people. (besides, we can't be bothered with trying to spend your peoples' microsoft points, the conversion is too complicated. ;) )
3)The game has more than what you are seeing here, this is just a small preview
4) Most important of all, that big ship at the end is indeed named Bl1mBl1m.

It's great to see smaller project, yet with serious efforts to make games. I wish you the best of luck with this! Will there be support for the 360 pad by the way?

^wow go BlimBlim lol

Nice lil' project indeed. Will definitely give it a go.

Can I ask what other tools did you use for this game?

I'm curious because next year I'll have a module dedicated to XNA, and was thinking of starting a project to get a bit of headway into the subject.

I will probobly give it a go, I'm a hardcore Shotemup fan after all, played way to many of em ^^.

In any event I do see quite many flaws in this title sadly, first off to many enemies showing up at sides and you have basically no way of attacking them, also side scrolling is upwards on a widescreen monitor making them having insane big area to attack you and you basically can do nothing.

Thought this is my only complaint about this title, I haven o clue how it plays thought even with that as that I for sure need to try it out.

As for omega five, it was decent but it didn't folow standard shmp rules, it had to big hitbox...

Actually,in our game you have two primary weapons; the first fires straight ahead, the second gives you two turrets with 360 degrees of fire, as well as realtime weapon change, so you are well equipped to handle all comers. And that's without even mentioning the special weapon :)
