We have been given a few days headstart to try the prologue of Akatori, a new Metroidvania game developed by Code Wakers. Its pixel art art style looks gorgeous and though it doesn't seem to aim at renewing the genre, we're still very curious to see what the full game will be like. The use of the character's staff as both a weapon and a means of traversal is pretty cool and the platforming element works well. In the demo, which will be available to all on April 19, you get to explore a whole donjon and we advise you to take your time to do so instead of running headfirst to the final boss of this first chapter. It's not that it's especially challenging, but there are several items that will grant you more health or new combat moves to be found. Getting crystal shards by beating enemies or simply destroying the crystals that are scattered around will also allow you to have access to a few goodies with the local merchants. Note that the following video does not feature all the content of the demo so you still have a few things to discover on your own.
