The Last Remnant has been released today in all countries, a first for a Square-Enix RPG. Like many others I didn't expect much from this game, so it's a surprise for me to have enjoyed the first hour so much. And even technically, especially for a UE3 game from a Japanese developer, the game isn't too bad with so far a quite good framerate during the exploration parts. It sure slows down during fights, but since it's not realtime it's not such an issue. More videos tonight and tomorrow!
Update 3: Part 4 in now available. I'm done for the moment, but maybe some more videos showing more of the game will follow over the week-end.

Damn I'm not going to read all the arguments, but I love the kingdom hearts games.

Also one more thing I wouldn't mind playing rpgs 10 years from now that are similar in design to Final Fantasy 7 or previous jrpgs. All I want with my rpgs is continue getting them in the same formula I'm used to. If something's going to change just give me a different story, better graphics, cool & different characters and I'm good. I don't want rpgs to try to do too much to advance the genre to their detriment. Its one of the reasons I can't like FF12 it represents something I don't want to see happen to rpgs which is why I'm so happy that Sakaguchi is seemingly picking up where he left off on the PS1 with his style of doing rpgs.

If JRPGS are going to take any risks with the battle system I prefer them to flat out copy the kotor battle system just give me cooler spell effects and some cool animations. Thats the only advancement of japanese rpg battle systems I'm willing to deal with. I think if they are going to change it the way bioware did it in kotor is the only way to go.

You wanted to know what could be done with turn based combat which is why I brought up Fallout. You know what else Fallout has? No break in between adventuring and combat, like FFXII but 10 years ago with a much more in depth system.

Another thing I don't understand is why do most JRPGs go out of their way to hide the underlying game system? Take FFXII's grid for example. You finally are given the ability to control your characters progression since the very earliest games. But you have to "guess" which path opens up the skill needed to wear that armor you found. In any Western RPG, you'd know exactly what is needed to wear that armor, wield that sword or cast that spell.

This is cool news. Both consoles have RPG exclusives to look forward to, so a multi-plat RPG from Square is nice. Both sides win this time.

I like the FFXII battle system and hope more SE games use it, but the liscence board was pretty stupid, as are having to buy gambit actions.

If final fantasy games are going to use a battle system like that I prefer they ditch the ff12 version (which to me looks like a variation of the kotor system) They just need to flat out copy kotor's battle system add better spell effects, add better animations call it a day. I'm serious kotor's battle system is the best fit for jrpgs I've ever seen without losing the essence of what makes those games really fun. Well for me anyway.

Isn't that what they're doing with FFXIII? Well, at least that's what I saw from the E3 trailer. Just looks like they Japanese'd it up a bit, but the concept is still the same.

Maybe I'm just crazy :P

KOTOR's battle system is so totally western.. it's not like it was invented w/i the KOTOR franchise even. It's basically just a simplified version of Baldur's Gate.

I haven't played much of FF12 myself, but from what I've seen (been watching a friend play through it on my PS3) I really dig the battles. So refreshing to see an FF game that take a different approach.

Saw the scans, techinically it looks nice(duh, UE3), but aside from that I'm not feeling it!

The art so far doesn't appear to be on par with Lost Odyssey, but we've seen so little afterall.

I'm starting to fear from reading about battle system this game could be a final fantasy, dynasty warriors only with turnbased combat and with a battle system that has too many variables in an attempt to appear feature rich, but it works to its detriment. I hope I'm wrong.

I don't like what I'm seeing it appears the battle system may be trying to do too much :/

Not liking the art so far. It really does look like some attempt to compete with lost odyssey.

Extra screen.

Yep and it isn't even about the graphics for me.. I don't like it artistically. Then agian maybe we just need to see it in motion since games usually look much better in motion.

Actually... this game is far from done so who knows.

The first shot looks awesome.. personally I think the character art (both the main character and the enemy designs) are a hair better than LO. Like I said.. personal opinion, but LO never really won me over.

The town definitely looks horrible though.

I wonder if this game will even play remotely like LO or if people are just jumping to conclusions.

No one really knows how it will play. Some say it will have a similar system to FFXII. Still, it's pretty up in the air right now.

also, I don't think anyone ever said it would play like LO, just that it looks strikingly similar to it(art style, graphics and what not)

post taken from GAF from someone who attended the event

Last Remnant in motion looks pretty goddamn astounding, if you ask me. Facial animation is fantastic, and the battles are incredibly kinetic and dynamic. Frame rate still a little choppy, but they wanted to stress it was still early in development. The towns were vast and full of life -- think Rabanastre next-gen and you'll have a pretty good idea of what they were all about.

Well, if it's geared towards a western audience, expect all of the locations to look the same and be shades of gray and brown. :)

I think the look of the city is fantastic, like the guy from GAF said looks like a next gen Rabanastre.

Battle looks interesting to me also, looks like you can target anyone in real time and then attack turn based, similar to how FF12 works.

Although it does have a strong feeling of Dynasty Worries, such as the map and the morality bar at the top, so it could turn out to be quite strategic as well.
