there is only so much real estate on screen and people demand detailed character models to be on show. it's the exact same reason first person shooters have their guns to the sides of the screen. it lets you see the details of the gun nice and close, it lets you shoot "from hip" without it getting in the way. plus it stops guns looking as shit as this:
EDIT: BTW this game is awesome. level design is great and it's really fun and responsive. looks really nice too. it's basically what i wanted MGSV to be. instead of bases spread across a large repetitive map, it's 10 semi-large mission that are all really varied in look and design.

Edit. Actually. Come to think of it. Uncharted pushes drake to a side even when not aiming.

See, he's centre left. Just like sniper elite. But again, look how far away drakes model is compared to SE4. You can't have it both ways.

Besides, Sniper Elite had a directly behind the char. camera and it worked just fine. Many a game had real problems nailing good, Gears-like TPS controls. So unless you can really make it work, like Gears games do, stick to the good old from the back point of view.
Here. I win. You all loose. :p
P.S. What was the prize again?
