This isnt going to be the only bad review, just watch.
I was thinking the same thing... for a game to get as low as 6.0 in gameplay on a website review has to have some very wrong with it

IGN UK tend to rate lower than IGN US, still, I think anything over 8.5 is out of the running.

No, he's right. They do vary, but I was just saying it's probably best to see what the US IGN gives it.

Edge text

Think of Ninja Theory's first attempt at an action game as God of War for the less picky set. Heavenly Sword earns this descriptor because it plays a whole bunch like developer SCEA's most recent God of War games, relying heavily on platforming and fighting. In this case, Ninja Theory has lessened the difficulty of the various puzzles that God of War is so well known for (seemingly to make it playable for the PS3 audience that's likely to latch onto the game), yet the game is still far more frustrating than it ought to be, due to a faulty camera system and sometimes unreasonable controls. Toss in that the combat is only slightly more complex it should be, and what you've got is a game that doesn't properly suit any individual audience.

Suffice it to say, it features all the principal characters you would expect and touches on some of the same basic themes as God of War. The whole game is told through a disjointed form of flashback narration. The dialogue and voice acting is fine for what it is, but as far as providing a satisfying action tale, you're out of luck here.

If you're more accustomed to Ubisoft's last attempt at the Turtles license, you're in for an awakening with Heavenly Sword. In some ways, it's a good awakening, in the sense that this game isn't altogether terrible and actually has its fun moments. Those fun moments come from the hop-happy platforming sequences that make up roughly two-thirds of the gameplay. Each stage is laid out in such a fashion as to force you to jump, double jump, wall jump, wall run, and flip your way through. Some of the stages are quite elaborate, relying on a lot of quickly timed movements and jumps that are reminiscent of what the recent Prince of Persia games have been all about. All told, there's a surprising amount of intricacy to the level design in Heavenly Sword. Of course, the relative difficulty of these levels has been scaled back significantly, and none of the stages take more than 10 or 15 minutes to blow through.

It was good of the developers to scale the difficulty back, as this is clearly a game aimed at a more impatient audience. The problem is that they didn't quite scale it back enough. The main frustrations with the platforming sequences stem from the camera the game uses. Because of the way it angles shots, it sometimes makes it impossible to properly judge the distance of a jump, leaving you to guesstimate and trial-and-error your way through certain sections. There are also times where the controls can get away from you. You're jumping around so quickly and so often that you may find yourself instinctively pressing the jump button too many times, ultimately overshooting your goal. Frustrations like this are palpable enough to the standard gaming audience, let alone younger players.

On the flip side, the combat mechanics have been scaled back to the point of making them incredibly dull. You really only have one main attack button, as well as a jump-kick button that operates independently of the primary combo system. The problem with it mostly stems from the enemies you fight being so utterly inept. Throughout the game, you fight wave after wave of pacifist thugs and ninjas who seem content to just swipe in your general direction from time to time. All you've got to do is mash endlessly on the attack buttons and pull together the occasional tag-team move, and you're pretty much never going to die.

Heavenly Sword has a slick look to it. The frame rate has a tendency to dip in this game, and the aforementioned camera issues are a real bummer, but otherwise, Heavenly Sword is a pretty solid-looking game.

Between the overly simplistic combat and sometimes-obnoxious platforming sequences, Heavenly Sword is like a man without a country. Younger audiences are likely to balk at some of the more frustrating elements of the platforming, and older players are going to be bored to tears by the effortless fighting mechanics. The moments when you actually do find yourself having fun with Heavenly Sword are just frequent enough to prevent the game from being wholly unadvisable to fans of the PS3 desperate to take part in some interactive adventures, but for everyone else, Heavenly Sword is one you can safely pass on.

Just as I thought, another bad score for HS, it really isnt looking good for PS3 as this was supposed to be THE system seller, seems like its more of a technical demo.

damn.....!!!! (not that i am bothered,) but still not good for the so called "system seller"

little bit shocked about their bioshock score...but like i said they pull no punches , and its not like they need to be controversial for being controversial sake or to sell extra copies of their magazine

seems to me that ninja theory spent so much time and effort making the gfx shine, and getting A list voice actors and creating "hype" they forgot about level design and gameplay mechanics.

No honestly, things are not looking good for this game. There is a point where reviews start to coincide, say the same things, etc etc. They have to be right. Yes, it's opinion, but it's starting to look like a very shared opinion.

Well I dont know if it has been posted or not, but a US Video Review is up.

Well I will buy this "decent" game what so ever, I loved the demo, although short, I still love it. The theme, the combat, cutscenes, animation, visuals in the big open environments that you see birds flying far far away from the screen infront of you...etc.
Its amazing, and Nitin Sahwney made a amazing soundtrack, and I would really want to get the entire score for it.

Anyway, here is the link.

this reminds me of Advent Rising a little bit.

that game also had huge production value and when it was the gameplay that sunk it.

but a 7 is still an enjoyable game. if I only bought games with 9.0 or higher review ratings I wouldn't even have a gaming library right now.

A 6-hour long game that is getting average reviews doesn't call for a purchase. I guess if* there's not much else to play someone might be inclined to buy it. It really seems like it'd make an awesome rental though. And who knows, maybe some more favourable reviews will start to surface.

Damn so would people just as quickly write off Mass Effect if there happened to be a review or website that didn't like what they saw?

http://www.destructoid.com/pax-2007-mass-effect-is...
Watching the first 20 minutes of Mass Effect played by a cute BioWare representative, I couldn't help but be reminded of a ventriloquist I saw on America's Got Talent a few nights ago. Why I happened to be watching America's Got Talent is none of your business, but let it be known that I wasn't happy about it.

Now, the thing about Mass Effect is that it seemed, more or less, like a ventriloquist's dummy. Of course, it was a very nice-modeled, well-rendered dummy with nice textures, but nothing more. The game, much like Pinocchio, lacks life.
Why are people so quick to write a game off after some reviews lol. One would think some guys wouldn't allow other people to make their minds up for them.

Whether they are right or wrong about Heavenly Sword I think IGN pretty much has a track record of showing they aren't necessarily always right about things. I see some people say jade empire was a letdown and yet IGN gave it a 9.8. Kingdom Hearts II is fantastic as was dominating sales charts in the US for months and yet that got a 7.6 from IGN.

If it isn't a 9 its a flop? Or does that apply to 8.6 and above?

Thats not a review ops, its a preview from a guy standing in a crowd at PAX watching someone play through a 20min demo, also its not even a reputible website when have you ever read one of there reviews? and i far as i can tell their previews and reviews are written by regular bloggers rather than journalists, so bias' are sure to show up.

Now i'm not saying that IGN/GS/EDGE ect.. are going to love it, but at least they are
official gaming sites and know what there talking about most of time, to use this Destructiod site in your example bears no weight.
