Have questions about the Rift, or VR?

I've had a Rift DK2 for about 6 months now. If anyone has any questions about it, or VR, fire away.

If you want any impressions or whatever feel free to ask. I have not tried every single demo, but I have played quite a few of them.

If not, just let this thread sink into oblivion. :)

What do you think it's the missing piece, why are these things not mainstream yet?

Wow, no response yet?

And the question deserves an answer, although I think INDIGO was merely interested in sharing his experiences. But you do have to wonder when one of these companies is going to decide to pull the trigger.

I mean look at it. Morpheus, Oculus, Vive, Gear, Hololens, Magic Leap. The field appears to be getting very crowded (with hundreds of millions being thrown around) but who is going to dip their toes in the big cold ocean first?

i'm guessing morpheus will see shelves first and have the most "real" big budget games released for it. plus it's a console/PC device so it'll benefits from that indie dev side too which currently oculus only can make use of... oculus will come next and do mostly what it's currently doing in it's dev form currently... but won't have as much big budget support but WILL benefit from mod support from practically every first person game ever...but morpheus will probably work with them too. the other variations on VR will release but i doubt they'll be as both as either morpheus or oculus. they seem to be the ones most people are talking about.

Yeah I would assume they aren't mainstream yet because there's not enough support yet

Yeah, even great drivers like VorpX run into issues because the Rift has problems properly displaying UIs and some in-game assets like stats, codexs etc.

Now I'm speaking specifically of my brief experience playing Mass Effect 3. What I took from that was that VR support for a title is pretty essential for there to be a solid virtual experience. The game studios have to provide it or you're going to have these hit and misses with compatibility. VR is not going to function like some application where you throw a switch and poof instant VR immersion. It's going to have to be baked into the game's code.

In other words ALOT of forward thinking is going to be necessary to fully support VR.

I also had the DK2 since last summer. Very very shortly said: it is too soon for VR. The main problem of the oculus was the resolution: you can clearly see the pixels and you can't aim at anything if it's not under your nose or it will be some weird mess of pixels (if you are playing shooters).

But the experience was really nice, I tried everything that could be tried. The games that were most comfortable were the games where you 'sit' (driving, flying games) or with a fixed camera (BlazeRush and similar).

Shooters are not yet very well implemented, the whole idea of headtracking / turning around with the controller just isn't right
