I don't get it. Is it open world/off road free roam? That world is way too detailed for a simple racing track backdrop.

Forza Horizon is open world/off road free roam, just like Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005). You can free roam anywhere you want and start races and challenges at specific points/places, or you can fast travel to them or anywhere else by unlocking a skill in the game.

I mean look at that grass, look at that terrain. I'm just amazed if it's all only to serve as a distant background enviroment. Also as I understand in this drone mode you control the camera yourself?

It´s supersharp, sure. But the sudden texture pop-in of the trees and foliage? And the way the shadows change resolution a few meters infront of the car? That kind of stuff should have been enhanced also, imo

Yes, in Drone Mode you can control the camera manually and fly around. If you find new locations and interesting items, it puts a sign in your map so you can go to it.

It's a very cool feature that helps when exploring and is a little better than just a default Photo Mode, since it marks relevant information on your map. You can see a gameplay demonstration video of FH3's Photo Mode below.

Also, if you want to try out Forza Horizon 3, there's a free trial demo available on both XB1 and PC. On PC, you need to have Windows 10 since it's only available in the Windows store. The game is excellent, it's one of the best Racing games ever made. I highly recommend it if you're interested.

On PC, you can adjust settings to resolve those issues. Maybe it has something to do with the XB1X's CPU, FH3 on PC is a very CPU intensive game and the XB1X's CPU is very bad, Playground Games probably can't do much about it.

I noticed that about the shadows too. It's really distracting.

According to rumors they are going to make new Fable game. They probably made this engine to be used in future games as well. This gen open world games look really impressive.
