I honestly prefer to have a hard time and learn to overcome it by learning and re-learning a game's mechanics till I'm great at them than decreasing difficulty. There's nothing wrong with decreasing the difficulty, but to me it just feels like I gave up instead of persisting till I get good enough.
I'm playing through Dead Space 3 right now, and after starting at the Normal difficulty because for some reason I remembered the game was very hard, I got bored at the middle of Chapter 4 - yeah, I was well ahead.
Enemies didn't scare me because their numbers, damage and health weren't something to worry about. This also made the game way, way less scary. But after putting in the Impossible difficulty, the game feels much more scary since every encounter will kill you if you're not careful in spending resources and how you fight.
I'm actually quite enjoying DS3 now, which is crazy since the game itself is not very good, but that tension you get when fighting for your life in a very difficult situation works very well for games like these - Shooters - imho.
