Resident Evil 2 gets a one-shot demo

From January 11 to January 31, players will be able to download the one-shot demo of Resident Evil 2 on PS4, Xbox One and Steam. The mission from this special demo features Leon S. Kennedy and players have 30 minutes to complete it or try again. If you succeed, the end demo will reveal a new cinematic trailer.

*sighs*

A "one shot demo", eh?

So, a time limited, time limited demo, just to reveal a trailer? Like, fucking seriously? Is the industry now past the point where it feels like giving you a demo is almost charitable and therefore restricts its accessibility? What's next? Paid for demos? Oh, that's right: that's called early access.

I know it's nothing new, because the original game demo back in 1997 was only available on a disc which you got with the RE Director's Cut, but at least they let you keep and play the fucker as many times as you wanted. These companies now, I swear. They shoot themselves in the foot intentionally, it seems. They'd get far more sales for stuff if they just leave a demo up there for anyone to grab if and when. At least the game is out soon.

This demo is just that, a demo of the game for people to play and see if they like the game or not. The trailer is just a bonus reward for those who do. The fact that it is on PC surprised me, since most companies ignore demos on PC for AAA games.

This is great since it will allow people to see how well it performs on their PC, as well as help with any potential bugs and give the developers feedback on any issues and how to improve the game's performance. Great move by Capcom.

Also of note, EuroGamer has an article stating that there's only 30 minutes to complete the demo, once it's up, you can't play it any longer. However, even if you fail to complete the demo's objective, the trailer will still be unlocked at the end.

For those like me that don't want to play just 30 minutes and then have to stop, it's best to just wait for the full game's release - only 2 weeks away. Afaik, the demo isn't a special part that isn't in the game, so people will get this segment in the full game. There's also no bonus weapon, outfit or items if you play the demo, so no need to play it imho.

For those who want to see the trailer, I bet there's already hundreds of uploads on YouTube as I type this, the only incentive to watch the trailer unlocked in the demo is to watch it in high quality. Though Gamersyde can take care of that - if they're allowed. * wink wink*

be funny if someone cracks the demo. Just cause 2's demo timer was breakable....
Commented on 2019-01-09 09:53:30
It's basically how it was at e3. It was a 30 minute timed demo, i hope its a newer build though

30 minutes is long enough to know if i like it or not. mostly the way it handles (hopefully nothing like RE6) and i want to know if they've toned down the excessive nonsense they spew while walking around/shooting stuff.

Surprised there is a demo for PC too. Likely workaround the 1-shot thing will happens day later. ^^

@MrWhite calm down bruh lol.

It's annoying, mate. I mean, what if for whatever reason you can't pick the game up for a while, and then decide you want to try it out? Nope. Denied! Tetris Effect was a similar thing. Where I can understand the reasoning behind that perfectly enough, it's still a bollocks for people who need to try something before they buy it.

The kind folks at the Resident Evil Reddit have decided to make a guide with "demo discussion thread to share tips, tricks and finds in the demo! Keep a lookout for that on January 11th." Of course, that's not just them, the whole Resident Evil community, as well as people on Steam, PS4, XB1, most gaming sites and YouTube channels will make many articles and videos about the demo.

So for those that are afraid to miss out on anything since they only have 30 minutes, just wait 1-2 days and the Resident Evil community will dissect almost everything in the trailer - just like they did with the Resident Evil 7 demos.

Also, some people in the Resident Evil community have said they will look into ways to stop or work around the 30 minutes timer. Shouldn't take long for people to find a fix, it's a very popular AAA game and I'm sure many modders, software engineers, programmers, etc will look into ways to work around the timer.

Another option is for those with multiple platforms, they will be able to play the demo multiple times. As well as being able to create new accounts.

I know none of this is ideal, but only requires a little bit of patience or effort. Still, as much as I'm excited for the game, I will wait for the full release, this demo feels like getting a taste of something, then when it gets great, you're stopped from enjoying it more.

I would make an analogy about sex, but it works with many things, really. Like watching a movie for 30 minutes and then wait 2 weeks to finish it, listen for a song for 30 seconds or just 1 track from an album, eating the first bite of a great meal, or going out with friends just to down 1 beer and then leave 10 minutes later. What's the point!?

Dude, they could just not release a demo entirely, what are you exactly pissed off about? :/
I'm happy they decided to release it for PC too because now I can see if my rig can take it or not

because it might be shit and save you £40? alternatively it could convince someone on the fence to buy it...isn't that the point of all demo's? to either sell you on something or not. if i can try before i buy i always will.

This is exactly me, I hope they release the next demo for DMC5 on PC as well. both these games are a must buy for me but I dunno if my PC can handle them well atm.

Exactly.

And I think people misconstrue my feelings on this. I'm not "pissed off" nor am I "angry" or whatnot. I'm confused. Baffled at the reasoning to release a demo that is not only time restricted, but time limited in general. It's fucking daft. I mean, what if I download the thing, start it, pause it, and for some reason have to stop and turn off the console or go do something more important? It's something I hope we don't see more of in years to come, or worse, no demos at all, because that's where it all seems to be heading. Games are expensive enough, and getting more expensive, and the reluctance to release a demo of most AAA games fucking stinks. Give money first, ask questions later is their motto.

Another thing is later down the road, what if someone wanted to try it and couldn't because the demo expired?

Thankfully, in the US we have Redbox here

That's one of the points I was making.

Personally i'm more baffed at the way Capcom handle these small dlc packs. Let's say i'm buying now Steelbook edition and that comes with only one dlc costume, while the rest (4 more) + original OST swap option thing are included in deluxe edition (digital only in EU). Such a stupid decision to lock the OST swap for only certain edition.

As for the demo - even 30 minutes are enough for me. I just want to test how the game controls. I don't know what Capcom did in RE6, but movement/shooting felt so much worse than RE4/5.

Nothing better than Yakuza6's one shot demo where it tricks you to play the full game.

You game sucks sega, quit that shit.

Intersting they're kind of taking the PT route. At the conclusion of the demo (if you beat the demo within the 30min timer) you get treated to a all new trailer. Now as for this 1 shot nonsense ....that's cute. There are several methods to get around this foolishness. NBA2K tried to pull the same 1 shot crap with their demo, and I STILL played the demo repeatedly. *sips on a glass of grape juice*

I don't know about you but after playing that 30 minutes all could think about was "I WANT MOOORE"
Plus, The optimization on this game is nuts. I can't believe i could get 768p60fps with an i32100/gtx650ti

Weirdly the game looks worse on the one x for some reason. It's just a much blurrier demo on that system. Which makes no sense given the power difference. That's either poor optimisation or something went wrong.

They did great on PC so I'm sure One X will be fixed with a patch, if not before release.

Another game and yet another awful HDR implementation! Yet Capcom smashed it out the park with HDR in RES 7

What is going on with these devs and their lack of ability in HDR in the past few years?

I'm curious to see how final version looks on One X. In this demo 4k / 30fps option is not even available, possibility of little more polish iin final version is not excluded.
