We reviewed NieR Automata

We reviewed NieR Automata

NieR Automata may have been available in Japan for a little while, but we didn't purchase the game in advance on the Japanese store and waiting for the official review copy sent by Square-Enix. As carzy as it may sound, the NDA we signed forbids us to show you much, so we only have 4 gameplay videos to share, with absolutely no spoilers whatsoever. The full review is only in French, but we have the verdict and +/- section fully translated as usual.

Verdict

While the gaming media is mostly occupied with the release of the Nintendo Switch, alongside the remarkable Legend of Zelda, and the technical masterpiece Horizon: Zero Dawn, NieR: Automata deserves a spot right between these two mastodons. With its varied gameplay, rich background and plot, incredible soundtrack, and highly energetic battles, the game has a lot going for it – something even its technical quibbles can't overshadow. With exceptional results, Yoko Taro and Platinum Games come together to remind gamers everywhere that Japanese developers can still deliver a great experience for players of all ages.

On the plus side

+ The amazing OST
+ Incredible art style
+ Engaging story
+ Some interesting sidequests
+ The RPG aspect
+ Smooth combat
+ Perfect handling

On the down side

- Not perfect technically
- Some passages are a bit dull
- The open world can feel empty at times

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Before you or anyone says "I'm" wrong, please first understand that the creator of The Legend of Zelda series, Shigeru Miyamoto, himself has stated on numerous occasions that The Legend of Zelda is a RPG series.

Nintendo also oficially regards it as such and even puts The Legend of Zelda games in the RPG category on its eShop and Virtual Console sections accordingly.

RPG or "Action RPG" to be more precise - like the Souls games, either way one looks at it, since Action RPG is a subgenre of RPG, it is still a RPG nonetheless.

Most people don't consider them as such, but whether someone agrees with it or not, it almost ends up being irrelevant since Nintendo's official stance is that The Legend of Zelda games are RPGs.

PS. I really hope this doesn't turn into a debate, since it's not "my" opinion, but Shigeru Miyamoto's and Nintendo's. And no, I do not consider Breath of the Wild to be a Action RPG, for the record, but I didn't make the game so what the hell do I know.

I mean by that logic someone saying any old shit makes it true. Lol
Like I said beforehand, we shouldn't debate since there's no point to it. The opinions of someone like Shigeru Miyamoto and the thousands of employess at Nintendo are almost irrelevant. Instead everyone should listen to you, because of all of your incredible accomplishments in the games industry over 3 decades like... also... and let's not forget to mention...

That's why your opinion is the truth, because after all of that you definitely know things better than the creator of something, responsible for creating multiple successful iterations of that something, something that went to gain enormous critical success, something that has lasted and triumphed for over 31 years, something that still manages to reinvent itself in a way that is masterfully done, something that has millions of fans around the world, and specially the company responsible for developing and publishing that something for all those years and profitting imensely off of that something.

Specially vastly more than any dumb idiot out there on an internet forum saying any old shit, thinking "it" makes it true.

Your opinion or miyamoto's, i couldn't give a fuck. Zelda is about as RPG as uncharted. Lol even the souls games stretch the definition a bit.

Souls are arguably more true RPG than most games. Your character is essentially a blank slate and once you know the lore of the game the way you know the rule book of a tabletop RPG then you can role play that character.

I don't know if i should rent first or buy.I read you have to complete the game 5 times to get the full story, even though i watched a video say 3 times sigh.I enjoyed the demo but i may have to rent first to be sure.

Why are Zelda games not RPG's? I haven't played one since the 2nd game so I don't understand why they are not considered an RPG anymore.

Id qrgue thqt Zelda isnr an RPG since there is no roleplaying.

non of that is relevant though. genre's are defined. if naughty dog turned around and said uncharted 4 was a space opera would you just go. "well, i guess the devs said it so it must be true"

and i'm not saying my opinion is true either. i'm saying the definition of the genre doesn't relate to zelda. miyamoto thinking otherwise is also irrelevant. by his definition every game where you control a character is role playing. but that isn't what the genre is. we know this as gamers....well, most of us anyway.

I see some pretty ugly LOD swaps in the environment when you're exploring.
