We reviewed Guardians of the Galaxy

We reviewed Guardians of the Galaxy

After The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us and Batman, Telltale Games are back with another comic book adaptation, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - The Telltale Series. We have completed the first episode which will be available later today, so find out our verdict inside.

Verdict

We'll need more convincing before we can say if bringing the Guardians to PC and consoles was a good idea. After an introductory scene faithful to the movie adaptation and quite an unexpected turn of events at the end of the first big fight, this season opening plays it a bit too safe, with very few memorable sequences. The dated graphics engine and stiff animations are partly to blame, but the main problem is that the stakes aren't high enough to make you want to see what's going to happen next. It is obviously too soon to say whether or not the season will be worth it in the end, but we do hope the plot will take us somewhere more interesting in the second episode. After all, the characters are truly endearing and the way they are developed is very respectful of their comic book counterparts, so if you're a big fan of the series, you might find something to enjoy here. Just don't expect anything truly interesting in terms of gameplay, as even the quick time events offer no challenge whatsoever. Until we can see what the rest of the season has to offer, the best we can tell you is: we are Groot.

On the plus side

+ The characters and the game world
+ The humor
+ The soundtrack
+ Solid voice acting
+ Classy title screen

On the downside

- The Telltale formula is starting to get old
- Limited gameplay
- Lack of stakes
- Few memorable sequences
- Technically dated

The sad thing is that I was going through hundreds of images of the Guardians of the Galaxy comics, and they're full of interesting encounters with other super heroes and villains, new technologies, new worlds with new species, etc.

They're full of very rich and interesting content just waiting to be used - like Angela, Nova Corps, X-Men and Spider-Man crossovers. Another good source of material is the Guardians of the Galaxy cartoon on the Disney XD channel. Hopefully Telltale goes beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe influences - both in story and character designs.

KORNdog Luring those dynamic hordes to ripper camps sounds fun because they worship them. They won't fight them they'll simply be eaten willingly. Lol (8 Hours ago)

  • KORNdog
KORNdog They've put in challenge hordes that are super tough to beat that are pre-determined in size and strength. You'd be stupid to fight those without a ton of resources. (8 Hours ago)
  • KORNdog
KORNdog @droezelke: that's the challenge hordes. The end game ones. There is an overworked horde that moves and sleeps, and eats based on how you've affects the rest of the world. (8 Hours ago)

droezelke @GriftGFX: Bioshock 1 is an absolute classic. Bioshock 2 wasn't Ken Levine. Infinite was just good. (9 Hours ago)

MikeManiac61 @GriftGFX: Oh yeah, it definitely had something going on for it. The ending to me was just...ugh. The 1st managed to keep me attention throughout, I just wanted to be done with Infinite halfway. (11 Hours ago)

GriftGFX Amazing characters, and great dialog, but the plot has serious issues and I felt like the way it expanded the universe and connected to the other game was convoluted. (12 Hours ago)
