GSY Video PC PS4 Xbox One

Among the many surprises of Sony's conference yesterday was the reveal of Resident Evil 7, which has obviously borrowed a lot from the late Silent Hills. Now keeping in mind that this too is a playable teaser, there si a chance that the final game won't be that close to what we can see here. Until we find out more, we are quite interested in the new direction the series seems to be taking. Let's just hope the game will be much scarier than the demo.

I think it's just a matter of time until we see the first victims of a vr heart attack. I played simple looking horror games on the Gear vr and i had to stop playing after a few minutes because the whole body reacts independent of the shitty graphics.
Immersion in vr is extreme.

Exactly. People who are writing this off by saying stuff like "RIP Resident Evil" and other such nonsense really don't have a clue what they are in for, and are seriously underestimating what a bold and brave direction this is. It's basically what I always dreamed a Resident Evil game could be, and you can imagine reliving the original game actually walking through the first Spencer Mansion? That's crazy shit your trousers material. There's a fair difference in seeing a zombie pop out of a wardrobe on a TV screen, than actually physically turning around and seeing it jump out right in your face.

My only issue with it is the forced 1st person view - that's just a deal breaker for me. If they include 3rd person view it's day ONE. Otherwise, it's a bargain bin game just because it's resident evil - otherwise I won't get it at all.

But it's built for VR. It's a completely new and fresh experience unlike anything else before it. It's not a rehash, a remake, or an over the shoulder actionfest. People wanted a return to horror. This is as close to actual horror anyone could have hoped for. If the game is good, then it's a killer app for the VR platform.

It's not just for VR, it can be played with a controller. It's fine to have a first person view but give me a third person view option too. RE was always third person. I dont care about the action. I watched the demo above and it's brilliant - I simply do not like first person and it's the reason I dont play FP shooters.

i thought you played halo 5? it's a shame you missed out on games like dishonored and deus ex, they too are amazing first person games. i'd suggest opening your arms to new perspectives.

Yes, but it's clear that the game is intended for VR to get the full experience from. It's obvious the game has been built from the ground up with VR being the focus, not to sit in front of a TV screen to experience it. It's sort of like buying a racing sim, only to play it with a controller. You're not maximising the potential by doing that.

I have always stated that I played FPS that are really good. in my entire gaming life I played: Half Life, The original Far Cry (then Far Cry 3), Doom 3 and the Halo Games for their story.

EDIT: Dishonored which I own through games with gold is waiting to be played. I suppose another first person RPG game I played was Oblivion although if I remember correctly it had a 3rd person view option.

why did you play doom 3 and far cry if you are only playing the good ones?

The original far cry (on PC) for its time was a ground breaking game and Doom 3 is AWESOME! For the record I dont consider FarCry 3 good. I threw FarCry 2 in disgust and never returned to it but people raved about FarCry 3 so I played it and it was OK.

THIS:

"Yet this minimalist first-person entry doesn't seem like a return to the series' roots either, but rather the restless folks at Capcom chasing a different trend: that of the minimalist sensory horror experience."

the fact it mentions horror means it's closer then the last 3 games have been. so it's a step in the right direction. and resident evil has been far too many things to say it has to be a certain perspective. we've had fixed camera survival horror games, third person tank control shooter, third person action shooters, first person shooter, and first person on-rails shooters....first person is the most immersive. you're looking through the eyes of your character. you are there...especially true for VR. it's sense of horror and dread will be much higher then any third person game ever could be.

plus your logic makes no sense... you are willing to play "good" (i use the term loosely) first person games...but not this because its first person, even if it ends up being good? that's pretty selective...

resident evil lost it's survival horror and has done for years...and now it's found it.

As far as Resident Evil mainline game goes, this is far from it. But as an Horror game, this looks great and reminded me a lot of P.T. to the point I thought Sony had acquired the rights from Konami to finally make it.

As long as it retains Resident Evil's identity and it's very good, I don't have a problem with it being in 1st-person view. Just because previous entries in a series have been in a certain perspective or even genre, doesn't mean that developers can't or shouldn't experiment with it.

A lot of great entries in a franchise come from developers trying different things: Final Fantasy mainline and spin-off games, Onimusha Tactics, Prince of Persia, etc.

There are hundreds of more examples, but I can't remember any others right now, but if one looks at what previous entries in these franchises were and what subsequent entries became, it will be easy to see how different they are, but without losing their identity.

Exactly right.

Really, it sort of baffles me the sense of entitlement and dummy spitting when a developer tries something new with a franchise. Oddly, I think people wouldn't be so critical of this if they saw a walking corpse, because then it would seem more familiar to the series. This looks as if it's disregarding all the other terrible stuff that RE became bogged down with with each game release, ie, terrible enemy and ridiculous character design, daft story elements, and manga style supernatural shit like a paranormal-eque Wesker. This replaces all of that nonsense with a sense of dirty gritty realism, and a presence of proper horror. If there is zombies in this, and they are a real threat, it'll be nerve wrecking. Just the potential and the prospect of the 3d sound effects alone is incredible.

Ohh a VR Debbie Downer... so what do you think of the Conjuring and the other ghost jump scares games...VR is going to become a virtual haunted house.

Who would had ever figured? That Resident Evil would become the Silent Hill we've been waiting ages for! It seems to have perfected the terror of P.T. combined with the psychological horror of Silent Hills 3. This game is gonna be intense in VR.
