The lucky few who got a beta key for Battlefield: Bad Company can connect now to Xbox Live and enter their code to download the game. The others will have to live with our videos. Since I'm as bad as ever with FPS games, actual gameplay footage will have to wait for Snoopers to finally download it too, but here is the Attract Mode of the beta.
What I've played was a lot of fun, it definitely felt like a Battlefield game. Controls were good too, and lag was minimal. The only downside was a very visible tearing of the image.
Update: Gameplay video #1 added.

2) lack of jets kinda sucks, but i suppose tanks/jeeps/humvees/artillery/helicopters is ok ... tho i think they should have added the jets and just made AA weapons for infantry available.
3) upsetting destrutability features missing... inside walls fine because then the whole building would need to be able to collapse... but why the hell cant we blow holes in the roof and jump through to surpise enemys?
......
Guys can anyone tell me if Split Screen guest support on xbox live is present???? or if DICE has said if it will be present in the final game?

Commented on 2008-03-27 02:11:38First of all, I'm not going to talk about the lack of AA or the disconnection problems or even the numerous bugs that the game struggles with at the moment as this is a BETA after all, and it will most likely be fixed in the final game.
With that said, even with only two maps and one gametype I think BF:BC is a really great game! They have changed a lot in terms of the overall feeling of the game so that it will feel more like a console game, which at least I think is very good, though some people might not agree with me concerning this. Infantry combat plays a lot bigger role this time around, and even if you still may gather up a bunch of easy kills by just hogging the tanks, the vehicles are a lot more vulnerable as pretty much everyone and their grandmothers spawn with explosives, including snipers and medics who can even call in bloody instant apocalypse air strikes with a press of a button. In the end this means that anyone can "easily" take down a tank alone. They are still very feared opponents, though.
Also, as you need to actually run in and physically plant explosives on the gold crates in order to "capture" them, vehicles plays more of a support role in BF:BC where the infantry does the actual assault.
The capture the gold gametype (or whatever it's called) is imo a rather clever twist of the traditional territories gametypes that the old BF games used. It can simplest be described as a combination of the traditional BF and Assault mode in UT. The game starts off with one team defending and one team attacking.
In the HUD, the attackers have one long reinforcement bar which ticks down every time someone dies (nothing strange there). The defenders however got unlimited (?) number of reinforcements, but instead they have two smaller bars in the HUD representing the "HP" of the two boxes with gold that each base possesses. Now, you probably thinking (or not if you have actually read about BF:BC before) "ARE THERE ONLY TWO BASES OMFGBBQ?!". No, this is where the gametype differs the most. The map is divided into several smaller areas. In the begging you are only able to be on the very edge of the map, where only two main bases exist (of course there are some smaller buildings scattered around the map as well); the attackers base and the defenders first base. In the defenders base there exist two boxes of gold which the attackers have to "capture" by either planting a bomb on them (just pressing B) or simply shooting at them until they break, which takes more time (the difference is that when you shoot at them they will instantly lose their HP forever, but when you plant the bomb it will either get destroyed entirely after a couple of seconds if you succeed, or if the defenders manage to disarm the bomb before it explodes, the entire assault will have been fore nothing).
If the attackers manage to destroy both of the boxes, they will acquire the base, regain some of their reinforcement-bar and a new section of the map will open up where the defenders will get pushed back to, to another base.
This will repeat around three or four additional times until all of the gold boxes gets destroyed or when the attackers runs out of reinforcements.
About the graphics, I would say that it's very varying. When I first started playing I though that it honestly looked kind of dull if not even bad. The ground is very flat and the buildings are rather blocky and uninteresting. However, I'm no pyrotechnic, but IMHO the explosions got to be the best I have ever seen. When a tank blows up, it doesn't just explode a little, it's like a freaking nuke hit it! And there's a lot of explosions.
The destruction that has been so heavily advertised is a very difficult matter. If I recorded a video solely showing you the destruction, you would undoubtedly be disappointed. The system is build similar to how the walls work in The Sims. The buildings are not realistically destructible, instead it's build out of a number of sections (around 1 m wide) on each wall which can get blown up, e.g if you shoot a grenade at a wall, and entire section of the wall will break down, which sometimes looks a bit odd when you fire a grenade just between two sections. Most buildings can't get completely destroyed either, because you can't destroy the edges of a building so after a couple of minutes of mortar fire you will eventually have a bunch of pin houses scattered around the map.
It is possible to damage the ground too, but it seems like it require some rather heavy fire power to do it. Mortar fire will make small craters which you can hide in, but I don't think (I haven't tried) you can make a hole in the ground with your hand grenades or similar.
However, this might seem like a lot of bad credit, but everything bad anyone has ever said about the destruction in BF:BC goes straight out the window the second the first enemy tank thunders down the hills, with its machine gun cutting down trees like rain forests, bombarding the little town you are hiding in with shells of pain and then in a roar of evil and suffering drives right through the entire house that you are hiding behind (the tanks actually behaves way more realistically in terms of physics than I have seen in any other game. They can drive over/through almost anything, including jeeps). Your reaction may differ, but the first thought that went through my head was pretty much; "holy hell that fucking tank just drove right through the bloody building!"
To sum up that; the destruction isn't nearly as advanced as I hoped it would be, but in terms of gameplay and the look of it when you are in the middle of the battle, it works really well! (You have no idea how thrilling it is when you are being fired upon by rockets and machine gun fire, and the trees and buildings just explodes around you)
Of course BF:BC also features a ranking system and unlocks (like all games released today it seems). Though, this is what disappointed me the most, and what I really hope they will change in the final game. The rank don't actually do anything other than showing everyone else who's the biggest geek on the server. Though, every time you rank up you also gain one (1) unlock point which you can use to unlock new weapons and gadgets. The thing is, there's only one gadget and two weapons for each class, and all of them costs one point. Within the first hour, I ranked up to rank seven, where I've unlocked pretty much everything I would ever need, especially as the weapons you can unlock aren't really better than the ones you start off with, some which are even worse (the silenced sniper is nothing else but useless). There's also two additional weapons for each class which you need to buy for real life money in order to unlock, but again they are not even better than the original ones (the icons doesn't even look different enough for anyone to notice that you use them)
This really bothers me enough. This had really great potential, where they could have implemented a similar unlock system that Army of Two uses, which would have been more than great. Instead we get something that is pretty much non existent and feels very rushed and uncompleted.
Though they did however also implement a achievement like reward system where you get medallions, ribbons, tags e.t.c for completing some challenges like for example getting five kills in a row with an assault rifle or being in the best squad of the server. You do not get anything else for doing this than a little symbol in the reward list (think challenges in COD4, but without the unlocks or extra XP).
You also get a list of all the dog tags that you have gathered in your life time, which you get by killing enemies with the knife (ie you get the name of the person you killed listed), which is pretty nice.
Also, the controls says that it's possible to take screenshots ingame, though pressing the button doesn't do anything right now what I can tell in the beta. The standard controls:
Infantry
Right Trigger: Shoot/Use gadget/Use Knife.
Left Trigger: Aim down the sight
Right Bumper: Switch to primary weapon/gadget and browse through the prmry wpns/gdgts.
Left Bumper: Switch to secondary weapon/gadget and browse through the scndry wpns/gdgts.
Right Analogue Stick Click: Duck/Stand up. (no, you can't go prone)
Left Analogue Stick Click: Sprint.
A Button: Jump.
X Button: Reload.
Y Button: Knife attack/equip knife (there seem to be a difference between pressing Y and equipping the knife and then pressing the right trigger, as it seems like you only take the enemy dog tag when you kill him with Y).
B Button: Get into vehicles/Plant explosives on gold boxes.
Start: Bring up menu.
Back: Bring up stats.
Vehicles (not entirely sure about these) (H = Helicopter)
Right Trigger: Shoot.
Left Trigger: Accelerate/go to a lower altitude(H).
Right Bumper: Nothing?
Left Bumper: De-accelerate/go to a higher altitude(H).
Right Analogue Stick Click: Toggle 3rd person/1st person view.
Left Analogue Stick Click: Notthing?
A Button: Nothing?
X Button: Nothing?
Y Button: Switch position. (Driver, gunner, passenger seat, etc).
B Button: Leave vehicle.
Well, I can't think about anything else to say about the beta right now, other than that it takes ridiculously amount of hits with the rocket launcher to destroy a tank. Why give me a rocket launcher when the grenade launcher works just as well?
Overall though, I'm positively surprised by BF:BC, even though there's a bunch of things which could have been made better. Though, I think it'll be a great game in the end which I will undoubtedly buy if not even preorder. It is not certain however that if you are a hardcore BF fan that you will like BF:BC because of the more compact maps and different overall feeling, but for the the most of us, it will be a great success.
