After The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us and Batman, Telltale Games are back with another comic book adaptation, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - The Telltale Series. We have completed the first episode which will be available later today, so find out our verdict inside.
We'll need more convincing before we can say if bringing the Guardians to PC and consoles was a good idea. After an introductory scene faithful to the movie adaptation and quite an unexpected turn of events at the end of the first big fight, this season opening plays it a bit too safe, with very few memorable sequences. The dated graphics engine and stiff animations are partly to blame, but the main problem is that the stakes aren't high enough to make you want to see what's going to happen next. It is obviously too soon to say whether or not the season will be worth it in the end, but we do hope the plot will take us somewhere more interesting in the second episode. After all, the characters are truly endearing and the way they are developed is very respectful of their comic book counterparts, so if you're a big fan of the series, you might find something to enjoy here. Just don't expect anything truly interesting in terms of gameplay, as even the quick time events offer no challenge whatsoever. Until we can see what the rest of the season has to offer, the best we can tell you is: we are Groot.
On the plus side
+ The characters and the game world
+ The humor
+ The soundtrack
+ Solid voice acting
+ Classy title screen
On the downside
- The Telltale formula is starting to get old
- Limited gameplay
- Lack of stakes
- Few memorable sequences
- Technically dated
