The Last Remnant The Last Remnant
Square-Enix / Square-Enix
Type: Action-RPG
Release date: 2009

2008-11-21 08:45:45 by BlimBlim
The Last Remnant has been released today in all countries, a first for a Square-Enix RPG. Like many others I didn't expect much from this game, so it's a surprise for me to have enjoyed the first hour so much. And even technically, especially for a UE3 game from a Japanese developer, the game isn't too bad with so far a quite good framerate during the exploration parts. It sure slows down during fights, but since it's not realtime it's not such an issue. More videos tonight and tomorrow!
Update 3: Part 4 in now available. I'm done for the moment, but maybe some more videos showing more of the game will follow over the week-end.

Anyway, you know it's going to be more like KH2 QTE..given this is SE and all :P

Yea probably, but FF10 had a good QTE thing where you had to press buttons in sequence to get the full limit attack.
If it's something like that i can live with it, because that requires you to have more skill in timing buttons presses.

Did limit breaks work sort of like mist/quickenings in FF12?

Sort of, depends which character's overdrive limit you used.
You would have to stop a pointer in the correct spot on a bar, only had a few seconds to do it.
or
A set of up down left right QTE button presses (space chanel 5) kind of thing.
Can't remember all of them, but it added a bit of variation to the battle from time to time.
From what i remember each character had several different Overdrive limits also.

Developers should go back to the drawing board and find a way for players to pull off these moves in realtime, and stop relying so much on QTEs.

That's assuming everyone wants real time JRPG's and i think you will find the majority don't.
Or at least the Majority of exsisting fans.

I also have to pose the question: how is QTE not realtime?
Sure, more happens when you press a button than what's usually assigned to that button, but when does stuff stop being context sensitive and start being un-realtime?
Also, what good would it do if games like God of War had special buttons for.. I dunno.. Throwing your blade chain thingy into the eyes of bosses and stuff and that button only works for that particular moment on that particular boss?
I think QTE when used lightly with good measure only enhances gameplay in a really natural way. It's a step away from "micro management" of your moves and into something vastly more surprising and thus suspenseful.

What I was referring to is developers in general over reliance on QTEs. QTEs were one of the first evolution in cinematic gaming, and it was great in Shenmue and God of War. It is now time for developers to take the next step and allow players take direct control of those cinematic moments or better yet, allow players to create them at will.
How will they achieve this, is anybody's guess, but I hope it does happen in this console generation.
