The Last Remnant has been released today in all countries, a first for a Square-Enix RPG. Like many others I didn't expect much from this game, so it's a surprise for me to have enjoyed the first hour so much. And even technically, especially for a UE3 game from a Japanese developer, the game isn't too bad with so far a quite good framerate during the exploration parts. It sure slows down during fights, but since it's not realtime it's not such an issue. More videos tonight and tomorrow!
Update 3: Part 4 in now available. I'm done for the moment, but maybe some more videos showing more of the game will follow over the week-end.

I think it has similar battle to FF12, you can run around in real time but fight in turn based.

The town and NPC's look very similar to FF12 also.

I think it would work great if you have like a core group of people and then the soldiers of the "morale bar" at the top are handled like guests were in FF12. Then, depending on your ability to effectively surround and defeat enemies, that rallies your troops.

Maybe this is the answer to the question I posed yesterday. :)

I haven't, I've just read what's been reported from that article. Eurogamer said that the camera angles are very floaty and cinematic though, so I didn't expect it to be realtime. With people here seemingly certain that it is I just went along with that.

Any links or care to explain briefly how it works?

Yes it said being about to attack enemies in the distance on a bridge for example.(how that works is anybodies guess) definately sounds turn based to me.

And angryboy how about explaining it for those of us who didn't read the GI article.

well as far as I thought, it would be turn based with some QTE's, like Kingdom Hearts 2 for instance. Then again I haven't really looked too much into the game, so maybe I'm mistaken.

actually disregard that, that was pretty much known by everyone :P

anyway, http://www.square-enix.co.jp/remnant/
teaser site is up. Nothing special though

Guys, all of the information is in the first post of the Last Remnant thread we had when the game was first announced.

Here is the bit about the battle system.

"Rush plays the role of one soldier among dozens as players group him and his companions into different Unions - small groups of five that can be ordered to perform actions on the battlefield. Though they are unified, the characters in Unions don't sacrifice their individual strengths. Different characters have special attacks and unique abilities, though these may vary depending on the current situation on the battlefield. "The commands can differ depending on the combination of Union members, the target of the battle, and morale. Players must make decisions based on these factors," says Takai.

The morale Takai refers to is another pivotal factor on the battlefield. Represented by a meter on the top of the screen, it fluctuates throughout the battle, resulting in different consequences. "If morale is low, characters will not be able to exert their powers. Players must aim to continuously improve their battle-styel and commands, or they may end up with a very difficult battle," Takai cautions. We saw an example of these shifting tides as two armies met in the middle of a field. Outnumbered, one side was immediately at a morale disadvantage. That changed as soon as a magic user summoned a monstrous flying beast, which sent the opposing army's morale into the gutter. Then Rush came in to save the day by calling forth a lumbering golem onto the field, which once again tipped the scales in his favor. It is easy to imagine that this seemingly simple match of tug of war will become the key to victory, especially considering that up to 70 units will be engaged in combat at once.

The conflicts in TLR aren't limited exclusively to such a grand scope. However, with the potential for massive clashes, there is certainly an effort to avoid throwaway fights and make each encounter matter. "Our main objective was to create a gaming experience in which the players can fully enjoy the battles as opposed to thinking of them as a grind fest," asserts Takai. "The story is definitely scripted to keep players on the edge of their seats, and we have prepared an abundance of short quests. However the main draw of this game will definitely be the battles."

From the article, one can assume that the battle system is a very cinematic form of turn-based combat. Sounds amazing so far.

Er... I have no idea how you figure that seals the deal on turn based. For all we know it could still employ a system similar to that of FF12.

Of course it's definitely turn based in the sense that it isn't Dynasty Warriors, but I definitely think it leaves the door open for a more active system than what Lost Odyssey is going for for instance.

I think that it'll be turn based, but the characters will have animation sequences while you enter the commands. They'll probably move around and such, not just stand there like statues.

pretty much sounds like that will be the case
The combat wasn't explained in detail, but from what we could tell, users control huge groups of fighters. The groups are mapped to go fight other groups of enemies on a "planning" overhead map. Once the enemies are chosen, everyone engages them and the animation sequence plays out. During these sequences, players are instructed to press the proper face buttons on time, or else they're "late" and the attacks are less successful. Well timed attacks yield awesome results, good gory violent results. When things really heat up, summons come into play. From what we can tell, the summons are the Remnants, and they can go head-up against other Remnants. The main character, Rush, summoned a giant stone-like beast named Cyclops, who proceeded to do battle with a giant bird. The scale and vastness of the battle field was pretty spectacular, with a ton of detail paid to each warrior fighting on it.

I have no idea how they'll make a large scale battle NOT feel completely static if it's a traditional turn based endeavour. I just can't picture it being very cinematic unless everything is very, very dynamic.

70 enemies waiting their turn? I just don't see it. I'd love to see it though, very much looking forward to a full unveiling.

I don't mind button pressing if its something like in FF10 with the limit breaks.

And i would rather they didn't have long animations, or at least have a button so you can skip it.

QTE is like Shenmue or TRL, KH2 was press a button to watch a sequence of long animations which you had no control over.
