The Last Remnant The Last Remnant
Square-Enix / Square-Enix
Type: Action-RPG
Release date: 2009

2008-11-21 08:45:45 by BlimBlim
The Last Remnant has been released today in all countries, a first for a Square-Enix RPG. Like many others I didn't expect much from this game, so it's a surprise for me to have enjoyed the first hour so much. And even technically, especially for a UE3 game from a Japanese developer, the game isn't too bad with so far a quite good framerate during the exploration parts. It sure slows down during fights, but since it's not realtime it's not such an issue. More videos tonight and tomorrow!
Update 3: Part 4 in now available. I'm done for the moment, but maybe some more videos showing more of the game will follow over the week-end.

I know this and so do you. (i think)
But i still think people are hoping for too much from LO, especially where the battle engine is concerned.
Graphically it is darker and less anime inspired than your average JRPG, but gameplay and story wise it's guna be as generic as ever.
Which is a plus for me, but not so much for you and many others.

It just seems quite generic to me, besides the immortality part.
What have you heard that suggest it won't be anymore generic than what BD turned out to be.
To be honest i haven't heard much about the story at all.
There is a strong theme around old mysterious machinery and such, but then this has also been seen in FF games in the past.

Oh god Jolli why would you even call Lost Odyssey generic? I mean I know people that watch anime will instantly be able to spot a bunch of anime / japanese inspired cliches, but there are different levels of it that are acceptable.
I know Blue Dragon has cliches. I know Lost Odyssey will have some too like the drunken guy who is apparently a pervert and treats women as sex objects and I'm sure there will be many many more, but to call it generic when its one of the most exciting looking rpgs to show up in so many years is kinda crazy I think. Its one thing to say there will be cliches, but label the entire thing generic.... *head explodes*
Blue Dragon is going to sell better than Eternal Sonata I'm pretty much already sure of that.

It's no more mature than say FF7 in my eyes, only the art style makes you think it is.
LOL Optimus you don't have to get on the deffensive, it's my most antiapted games on the 360, but i'm just saying it how it is.
I expect it to be very much like FF7 to be honest, i have yet to see LO show us anything unique in terms of story line of gameplay, so until i do, i won't consider it to be anything but another generic JRPG.
Being generic is hardly a bad thing, I love JRPG's and anime after all.

I'm with Jolli on this one too. I'm looking forward to Lost Odyssey, but it is generic. The can't die theme is a nice touch, but so far all the info on the game has a generic feel. That's not really a bad thing though. It is what it is

If Lost Odyssey is generic every single game in the 360 lineup is generic. Gears of War, Mass Effect, Too Human, Halo 3, Alan Wake its a very long list my friends.
Generic to me is something that appears to have no proper sense of identity or anything unique about it that can interest a large amount of people because they look at it and see something that looks uninspired or doesn't have a great vision. It can't interest them because they've seen it time and time again.
Lost Odyssey does not quality as such.

Its so easy to pick a single aspect of a game ignoring everything else it potentially offers and try to claim its generic and just like everything else out there. In Lost Odyssey when mortal characters die you have a choice of draining their talents or abilities in vicious fashion or you can leave them be to die in peace and what you decide to do will have an impact on the game. So using Final Fantasy 7 as an example tifa could die in a battle and be dead for good and depending what you choose to do to her after she's dead will have an impact on the game? I haven't played many jrpgs that do such a thing so like I don't see how its generic. We don't know a thing about the character, we don't know why he's even immortal in the first place, we don't know a thing about this life.
A game being called generic is a bad thing not a good thing. Is it generic because its turn based? Has a fixed camera? Simply because its a jrpg? I didn't mean a single word of what I said about any of the games up top including Mass Effect, but shouldn't we allow the game's story, characters, art ultimately decide if its a generic experience? Last Remnant I think has a generic looking artstyle so far, but I've seen so little so maybe that isn't entirely the case. I understand saying a character design is generic, or a premise or plot is generic, but the entire thing generic?
Answer me 3 things
#1 By your logic is Mass Effect generic?
#2 All JRPGS are automatically generic?
#3 What is the reason you're looking forward to Lost Odyssey in the first place?
Whatever your answer to #3 is will be why the game isn't generic

Still don't like the thought of picking where you travel to though. That sorta thing is fine for a game like Mass Effect where the technology aspect is there but I don't know in this one. If each town is built around these special remnants they're missing out on a major opportunity to make the first time you spot these things a memorable moment. The player should have the feeling of adventuring his way there. I hope what they did was a result of just it being early.

Generic to me is a decidedly negative thing, so even though I'd consider the story in the average jRPG as largely predictable as far as the overarcing plot is concerned, they usually have way too much flair and character to be considered generic by me.
Generic to me is when everything is stale, uninteresting and boring. When characters are one dimensional, charmless and unsympathetic in every way, and any interest in the story is essentially non-existant. Because colour and funky hairstyles are so prevailent in jRPG, and because inspiration is drawn from so many different cultures and eras, it's difficult for them to really be generic for me.
I also think this notion of "mature" stuff that seems to be common in the west, that humourless, colourless stuff with blood and suffering is somehow better is a great threat to what inherently makes jRPG delightful. Moogles running around the town of Rabanastre adds so much of the charm I think is important. Hell, all of Blue Dragon oozes charm. Both Moogles and Blue Dragon would prolly be deemed "kiddy" by a majority of western gamers.
As long as there's stuff in there that dazzles your senses, be it beautiful, colourful vistas, the orchestrated music, the wonderfully quirky characters and heartfelt charm, I don't see how they could ever become generic.
It's only when it gets too serious, too "16 year old's definition of mature" that it risks losing that charm.

Just SOME of the info that Interest me in the game is all the below, plus the fact that its the first jrpg that i will be playing. As Ops said generic can be said of almost every AAA next-gen game out there, so to lable it as such as a gamer is a bit silly dont you think?, as talking in depth about games is what this forums about.
Quotes that have me interested: Via Gamespot/IGN/1UP ect....
** It's an action role-playing game set in a world that is equal parts fantasy and science fiction. The game stars five immortal heroes who have lived for 1,000 years. Apparently, 30 years ago, a strange new power brought "magic energy" to the world. This energy was integrated into everything from technology to warfare, but of course, the power comes with some serious consequences. **
** The final scene we saw was of a submarine entering an underwater structure. Apparently, there are several sequences in the game where you'll control a submarine and cruise the depths of the ocean. You'll have complete control of the vessel, but what you'll actually do with it remains to be seen. The video we watched was a short render of a sub spiraling up an iridescent column that looked like something from a science-fiction movie **
** We now have a few hints at something resembling a gameplay system for Lost Odyssey. Kaim, who's apparently of royal lineage and is physically weak, can suck skills and power from the more mortal folk who surround him. Doing this will result in some cool effects that Sakaguchi is not ready to reveal just yet. Whatever emerges from your vampire session will be customizable by the player. **
** First, it's clear that Lost Odyssey targets a more adult audience. ** SOLD!
*** Though we didn't see any combat, Sakaguchi reiterated his promise to add new and innovative features to the turn based RPG genre. Real time combat elements will exist within the system, but which promised innovations will exist is still unclear. ***
*** From Sakaguchi's explanation, it seems that when an enemy dies in battle, then the ones who haven't died yet will be able to extract their power and use it for themselves. In addition to that, Sakaguchi explains that since the game has a hero (Kaim) that can never die, there's no possibility of getting a 'Game Over' screen. ***

Well you do say this will be the first JRPG you will be playing, it's about all i play, so i kind of have a different feel for JRPG and what to expect from them.
As i said though, many of the things in LO I have seen time and time again in other JRPG's, i do agree that generic can be considered a negative word but it wasn't intended as such.
Anyways of the top of my head.
As i said though, it's my most anticipated game on the 360, i just don't think it will bring much new to the genre, although i suppose if it gets more 360 users into JRPG's its a good thing at the end of the day.

Hardley any AAA next-gen games bring anything new to the table, but that doese not make them Generic games, i dislike playing anime so most other jrpg titles i see i gloss over, but the artstyle/look and feel of LO pipped my interest, and from what i know so far this game is on my radar big time.
