Some screens looks fantastic, especially that snowy mountains!

Reminds me of LOTR Two Towers and would be magnificent for fantasy action RPGs with this sort of graphics and settings.
Anyways, I am excited to see even a tech demo off this.

The number of particles they are pushing is pretty nuts. I don't feel like these screens are really doing the engine much justice.

I doubt we'll see any video until E3.

The engine does global illumination in real time? I just came in my pants. That's so freaking awesome. Ooh, i hope it does per particle attributes as well, that be the bees knees. Hope unreal 5 does realtime raytracing :p

Doesn't Frostbite 2 already do GI/Radiosity?

I suppose im really interested in the possibillity of having real active lighting with GI bounce. You sure that its not just a baking feature in frostbite?

I don't think so. There are newer demos too, but here's FB2's radiosity demo from 2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foXVF7q035Y

Cool, didn't realize it wasn't baked from playing BF3...then again i couldn't max the settings out either so maybe that's it. Frostbite 2 looks great though, no doubt about it.

I'm just imagining a horror game with all dynamic lights and GI...silent hill like it should have been :D

I think CryEngine has some kind of GI tricks at work as well. I'm not sure how legitimate a solution either is, but they both look great.

I'm not trying to downplay UE4 though. I really want to see the actual demo. Screenshots and write-ups aren't doing much for me.

Yeah, i agree that the screens aren't mindblowing but i think that the guys at Epic do some pretty good stuff so i'm excited to see more of it. I especially want to know more about Kismet 2 and the level editing environment. Sure, more graphic fluff is always nice, but the promise of speeding up development time is pretty much the most awesome feature ever. If they actualy do cut development time in half with the tools i'd be happy if they made no graphical improvement at all :P

Realtime GI seems kinda like a waste of power when you can bake it into a texture.

Except it takes a shitload of time to bake lights. If you can do it in real time the level designers can just try stuff out on the fly, modify the light as they see fit and just experiment. I think it helps a lot. Not to mention it looking nice with moving objects.

Not all GI is created the same. Obviously there are issues like quality, number of lights, etc. But the other issue is that you can have "realtime GI" that is partially pre-computed, e.g. with Spherical Harmonics, where you essentially have a realtime GI effect but it also has precomputed data.

What Epic is presenting in the Wired article is that the effects are behavioral. e.g. Think of CSS. In your "style" you set how you want your water to act and look and then when you create a material as "water' it automatically gets those predefined style behaviors. So you are not exactly building a mesh and then applying materials to your mesh but they are more one and the same. Further everything is dynamic and realtime so what you see in the editor is what you see in the game. Crytek is working toward the same as they showed last year when they had the Xbox, PS3, and PC all running the same content just generated drop in and drop out design/testing. These sorts of features are HUGE in terms of content and gameplay creation IF they can get them to work right.

lighting in BF3 is ass, it's taxing and doesn't look good. The only real time stuff is the gun fire and explosions (lighting the environment)

"lighting" in deferred render engines doesn't look good imo, it was a good solution for ps3 since it is a weak machine but going forward we need full real time lighting...or a better solution that DX11 provides.

I'm sorry i dont want to sound a dick or anything, but it just does not impress me..

Cliify B and co are apparantly trying to get MS and Sony to up the game with there next machines (apparantly they know the final specs and are not happy) so if there not happy with next gen it means that next gen is struggling to do run this engine which means there not really impressive at all..

This does NOT have me excited for next gen :(

yes the next gen machines won't be able to run Unreal engine 4 at 1080p @ 60 FPS. They will probably run the engine just fine at 720p @ 30 FPS (with slowdown)

Modern day gpu's are way too big and consume way too much power and not to mention they are expensive as fuck! If you build a machine today that has a GTX 690 it will run circles around PS4 and Xbox 8 before they even launch.

I hope Epic convince Microsoft and Sony for more power.

Of course I want that because I want for other Engines to use that power, like Crytek's Engine, Carmack's Engine, Dice's Engine etc.

I liked what I see of this Epic engine but Im not that particularly fond of the UE engines to be honest.

they will all be the same next gen...what do you mean you are not fond of the engine? They are going for full real time lighting, that was the only thing that held UE3 back during the early Xbox 360 days (terrible lighting with awful normal maps). Now the normal maps will be replaced by tessellation and the terrible lighting with real time lighting

I am really interested in seeing the Red Faction Guerilla engine, the destruction in that game is way better than anything

I don't like that much the "look" of the Engine thats all.

Just a preference thing, nothing wrong with it, in fact I love some games that uses it.

that doesn't make any sense....but ok. That being said pretty much all next gen engines are going to be exactly the same...all featuring DX11 effects. Now it will be about who has the best artists

Doesn't make sense why?

If you are implying that the artists are the ones to be blamed instead of the engine well then so be it, it doesnt make any difference to me if it is the engine or the artists that worked with it or modelers or whatever.

makes perfect sense to me.

Its like people ripping on ue3, saying all ue3 games look alike while praising some other gaöe on the same wngine. Artists, programmers and level designers are to blame in 90% of the cases, at least :P

I like the look of Gears of War 3 alot, looks great. But thats as far as I go, others are either shit or just not mentioning as a graphical eyecandy or special.

I could mention Mass Effect but thats not because of the graphics, the art and visual effects (like the lensflares, visual effects of the biotics and omni-tools...etc) is what made it looks great...in some places.
