I was naturally anticipating this game and decided to hope for the best, because I enjoyed Conviction so damn much. I gotta say, I really like what I'm seeing. A lot of people aren't really paying attention to this one, it seems, but I have a funny feeling that it's going to surprise quite a few people.

Certainly looks better then the crap-fest conviction...i hear you can actually move bodies this time around

I don't like that their "ghost" playthrough included enemies finding bodies. Past stealth game definition of "ghost" usually means no kills, no alerts, no bodies found. Hopefully thats still achievable.

I'm renting it. Conviction has put me off ever trusting them enough for a purchase.

Conviction was amazing. One of my favorite games this generation, honestly, but then it's also maybe the biggest surprise. I wasn't expecting it to be anywhere near as good as it was, but I thought it was fantastic. It's different from past Splinter Cells, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game.

I found it to be an awful splinter cell, and a pretty crap stealth game in its own right. It was an "OK" jason borne wannabe though, i'll give it that.

I think it has more natural and dynamic feeling, non cookie cutter stealth than previous splinter cell games.

It was a grittier kind of stealth, but the stealth gameplay at its core to me felt better. There were more layers of stealth. Stealth before detection, stealth when enemies are on alert and aware that something is up, and stealth when shit hits the fan.

It had less options available to the player compared to previous splinter games, as far as what you could do, but the core package I thought was tremendously better and future splinter cell games, especially next generation ones, will benefit for years to come thanks to the foundation built by Conviction. Conviction created the proper next gen groundwork for splinter cell. It also has one of the best executed cover systems I've ever had the privilege of using. Yea, it felt like an awesome Bourne game :D

"Non cookie cutter stealth"

ie, not a stealth game. As i said, an "OK" action game.

This new one looks better tho, at the very least some series staples have returned like distractions, moving bodies, non lethal takedowns, night vision goggles (how much of a fucking oversight was that in conviction), but still not ideal based on that footage. Mark and execute should have stayed in conviction, never to see the light of day again.

Mark and execute was a fantastic addition and added to the fun factor. It was also a pretty cool way to create different strategic options. It wasn't just an easy or cool looking way to get kills, I thought it fit very well and served a larger purpose than it was ever given credit for. It along with other additions made Conviction one of the most fun and replayable Splinter Cell games I've ever played. Last known position and the black and white mechanic were also incredible additions that really worked fantastically.

The level design in Conviction is also some of the best I think the series has ever seen.

To me, Conviction felt like the game where they finally made Sam as deadly and as capable as his hype leads you to believe he should be. For a supposed super spy, it was rather easy to get your ass kicked in previous splinter cell titles. I didn't feel he was adequately equipped to lay shit to waste if need be. In a game where targets are mostly wondering around without being aware of your presence, why exactly shouldn't Sam be able to stylishly pop a few of them right in the head before anybody realizes what the hell's going on? I hope mark and execute never goes away. It's too awesome.

In the context of what Sam was up against and how personal this mission was for him most of the way, a lot of the things that weren't included kinda makes sense. He was no longer working for third echelon, no longer receiving the same kind of support. He had to become more vicious and more deadly. Also, because I didn't play in awhile, I may be mistaken, but I could swear that there are non-lethal ways to take people out. You can kick people in the nuts, hit them with your gun, and a few other things, if I recall. It's just how you initiate It, I think, that determines whether or not it's deadly or not. Yea, you can just knock people out...

So wait, your saying the fact sam was no longer third echelon made him incapable of moving bodies, whisling and having night vision goggles (despite having the goggles themselves most of the time)

Erm, yeah...that makes ZERO sense. I'd understand if we where talking about the F2000 with its distraction cams and arfoil rounds etc, but not the ability to move bodies out of the way.

For an apparent splinter cell agent, he sure was messy in conviction.

Also, lethal and non lethal takedowns where context sensative...ie, not an option for the player, but dependant on the weapon you held (or didn't) the game also forced you into conflict, a definate no-no for an apparent stealth game. Just as big an issue as say, the combat focused boss fights of deus ex HR. in ghost recon you could actually ghost a level (no kills, no alerts, no alarms, no bodies found) in conviction i doubt that was possible...the later half of the game was way too geared up for combat.

Shitty game is shitty imo. Maybe not quite as shitty as the "next gen" double agent, but definitely shitty.

I'm saying there was no point in the context of the situations that Sam found himself in this time around. I mean, I can understand why he would not care to drag a body away from a location that was already pretty safe to leave a body. That can be said about quite a number of locations in Conviction. And, yes, there are times when you are forced into action, but it isn't nearly as often as you think. There are situations where people felt they were forced into action, but that I managed to get out of without having to kill anybody. It sure isn't easy at times, because you need to be pretty quick on your feet, but it's possible given you take the correct actions fast enough, and that's the way it should be.

Lethal and non lethal action is still an option if its context sensitive. I can choose to holster my gun and then go in for a takedown. That's me making a decision.

And isn't the whistling ridiculous on some level? Not like I mind when it's in there, but to a degree it's kind of crazy that you would go into some places whistling in the dark and some idiot is going to walk into pitch black darkness without calling for backup of some kind. If I hear some weird whisper or whistle from some suspicious and dark looking location, I'm alerting as many people as possible before I even think about making a move.

Also, I got through entire levels without killing people in Conviction. I sometimes did it anyway, because it was so damn fun :D

Also incredibly automated, ubisofts specialty. It does make switching cover LOOK really nice though. But much like conviction and then ghost recon future soldier, it just takes too much control out of the players hands imo. It aint splinter cell, but hoping for that to return seem like a pipe dream. Same goes for ghost recon, rainbow six, prince of persia and any other franchise ubisoft have...destr...."re-imagined"...lol.

That's what I like about the cover system. It makes every possible transition that you would think of doing, with respect to objects in your environment look fantastic, the way it should look on next gen consoles, but you also can do so much more. You have as much control with that cover system in Conviction as you have in any other cover based shooter. I'm not sure how other games utilize it though, as some of the games you mentioned are ones I haven't tested.

Nah, it's more than that. It's a fantastic anything cover system. It works incredibly well for believably sneaking around an environment and looking pretty damn cool while doing it. It doesn't matter where you are with respect to objects in the environment, there is a cool transition animation to get the player almost anywhere if you're close enough, particularly when you transition from one piece of cover to another piece of cover to your left or right. It's pretty well done.

But you don't have control though. You look at your destination, press a button and your character goes there (ghost recon future soldier was the same) its an automatic way to move around, you may as well have a teleport button. It does look nice, but the same can be said for the incredibly automated assassins creed series (oh, what do you know, another ubisoft game) you look awesome traversing the environment, sure, but you hold a button and everything is done for you...where is the skill? The sense of timing? conviction (and blacklist) are the same.

Splinter cell shouldn't even have a full blown cover system. Its cover system should be the shadows. But i guess that wouldn't work when your running and gunning through a middle eastern village in broad daylight calling in airstrikes...yeah, this game can show as many "almost splinter cell" levels as it likes, unless they've removed or re-done that mission entirely, it matters not, it aint splinter cell.

Again, the idea that you don't have control isn't accurate at all. You have full control. I repeat: full control. Just because there is a nice animation accompanying your movements that you yourself decide on doesn't somehow mean you have no control. It basically amounts to complaints about not having control because there are nice animations, and you don't dictate how those animations look. The way it works is that if there's something close enough to your character in the environment and you choose to go to that spot using a really nice looking animation, then you can. That's all. You control where you go, when you go, and how you go.

Going even further, here is where your complaint becomes even crazier. You don't even need to use those fancy animations. They are 100% optional, even in Splinter Cell Conviction. If you want to, you can choose not to bother taking advantage of those cool animations at all, simply just choosing to sneak around 100% the same as you did in old splinter cell games. Those animations were always optional in Conviction, and they are again optional in the new splinter cell.

And you don't have to run and gun through that middle eastern neighborhood. You can sneak through it if you want. Oh god, who cares if he called in some airstrike to distract the targets. I'm less sure of this, but I think there's a gameplay video where they don't utilize that airstrike at all. Sam regularly conducts missions in previous splinter cell games where he dealt with all kinds of situations. I think an unmanned helicopter was even targeting Sam in Chaos Theory.

No, it's automated. Do you, or do you not, look at a piece of cover, press a button, and then go there with no additional input from you, the player? That is as automated as it gets without being a cutscene. It's the equivalent of a point and click adventure game but applied to a cover mechanic. You click where you want to go, and old Sm fisher will head off until he reaches his destination. You have no analogue control, you don't mantel the cover yourself with a button press, or latch onto cover yourself when you arrive at the cover of your choosing. No. You look at a waist high wall, press a button and wait for him to arrive. Automated bollocks. Spin it all you want (you're a master at it). It's what it is.

You can do that IF you want to, but you don't have to use it. You can keep moving around normally if you wish without the fancy transition animations. You don't have to use them. You've never been forced to use them. They just look damn cool and, as such, people may want to use them because it really doesn't make much of a difference how you get there. If you know what you're doing, you aren't getting caught by the guards however you choose to get to that next spot. Get what I'm saying?

You have full analog control if you want it. It's a choice given to the player basically. And, yes, I can choose to enter into cover. I'm not forced into cover. I can press a button of my own free will to enter cover. It's called the left trigger (I may have forgotten the specific button, been awhile since I beat conviction, but you press a button to enter into cover) However, if you choose to use those cool looking transition animations, you don't have to press the button, as the point of the mechanic is to kill two birds with one stone and make navigating an environment look more fast and more skillful.

I'm seriously starting to think you haven't even tried these games. I don't know how it works in Ghost Recon, but I know how it works in Conviction. It's not spinning. I'm speaking from experience of actually playing and beating Conviction multiple times. How could you not know that this is how it works? Maybe you watched trailers and assumed that this is the only way to do things, but it isn't. I understand complaining about the introduction of other features like mark and execute etc, but this complaint is so out there...

Hold left trigger to get into cover.

Goodbye
Goodbye? LOL. Way to run off. :)

I notice you can't challenge what I said in any shape or form, so now you're running because you were exposed. Thank you for proving me right. Gloss over everything proving you wrong.

You have full analog control at all times if you want it, and you aren't forced into cover. You can press a button to enter into cover on your own. The cover transition animations are simply to kill 2 birds with one stone (movement to new position and cover) and to make cover to cover play more intuitive. But you don't have to use it. You aren't forced to use it.

I don't want to accuse you of not playing the game, but the only way you couldn't know this is if you didn't play the game and were just complaining just to complain. You have every right not to like Conviction for reasons we can legitimately disagree on, such as mark and execute etc, but you are now saying things about the game mechanics that simply aren't true, showcasing your lack of knowledge of what you can and can't do in the game.
