Splinter Cell Conviction is one of this generation's greatest games by far. I really and truly believe that. I know a lot of people, especially on GAF, have bad things to say about the game, but it's, in my view, more true, non trial and error stealth gameplay than any splinter cell game before it. The level designs are some of the best I've ever seen in that type of game. It's a very great looking game visually. There are literally so many different and very useful ways to approach an objective. The mark and execute feature actually works, and doesn't detract from the game. Rarely do you see a game execute it's primary game mechanics as successfully as this game did, being a kinda reinvention of an existing series, and I thought they hit it out of the park. The last known location mechanic. The game graying out when your location is concealed is also an idea I liked a lot.

The gadgets felt even more strongly integrated into the gameplay. Man, Conviction is one of my most treasured next gen game possessions, and so I can't wait for this game. It seems that they are taking a similar direction, judging by the shot where Sam is taking multiple guys out. :D

Korndog you played through conviction, beginning to end? That game is bloody amazing. I've tried all splinter cell games, and none are as good as that one, in my personal opinion.

You would think Conviction took splinter cell in a more action oriented route, but the stealth, with the way the enemies do and respond to things, the way the levels are designed, the way the cover system is setup, and when you just consider all of Sam's capabilities, it really does feel like far more legitimately stealth than previous games.

Previous games were basically memorizing levels. With conviction, everything felt more random or dynamic, and that's what made it such a killer game.

Yes, i thought it was shit, not ever remotely CLOSE to chaos theory, hell, even double agent (not the awesome original xbox version) was better and i used to think that was the low point of the series. These images instill absolutely no hope in me whatso ever. I can't think of a more uninspired location for a splinter cell game. Looks like there is some heavy cover based shoot action in there too :/ Look less like SC, more like the recent ghost recon, yet ANOTHER mediocre ubisoft game. Easy pass for me, even at this early stage.

To me individual Tom Clancy's franchises (SC, GR, R6) lost any sort of identity whatsoever. They all have heavy emphasis on shooting action, they all have cover systems and they all have mark & execute.

Oh god, it's almost like a joke. And I loved Conviction, but this looks like a Ghost Recon Future Soldier cameo expansion. I thought after Conviction, they knew what worked (stealthy fast movement, Last Known Position, Third Echelon level, cover system, presentation) and what didn't (Iraqi level, any gun other than a handgun), and would bring in more stealth back like dragging bodies. But from these screenshots, they went WAYYY the other way lol.

Is the creative director still Maxime Bellend?

True, it's definitely not the splinter cell of old, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I mean, at some point developers have to be willing to take a risk and reinvent a franchise, and conviction is easily one of the best franchise reboots I've ever seen.

Considering they literally scrapped all that they had at one point and started over on making the game, for the game to turn out that good is pretty amazing. Thanks to their taking a newer creative direction, they've effectively reinvented a franchise that seriously ran the risk of satisfying only a shrinking number of people with each version, and if we want to keep getting certain kinds of games, the games have to sell more, and sometimes that requires reinvention. The Splinter Cell games that came before Conviction just didn't garner the same kind of acclaim or excitement, and for obvious reasons.

Here's the best part about Conviction. It's really and truly a fantastic core for splinter cell games of the future to continue building on for years to come. I really believe that. Even if you hate the game, most have to admit that some of the game's mechanics are incredibly well designed. For example, Conviction has quite possibly the best executed cover system in all of gaming. Also, there's a level of satisfaction that comes with stalking a target in Conviction that is unlike any game I've ever played. You don't have to go around killing people if you don't want to. You can very easily sneak past them, but it's good to see that Sam isn't a complete joke in a potentially heightened awareness situation where the enemies are looking to kill you. To really see the brilliance of Conviction, you have to have those situations where your position becomes known, and then you make clever use of the last known position indicator to turn the situation to your advantage. That's when you see how satisfying it feels to just play this game.

Conviction, especially considering Sam's situation in the story, made a whole lot of sense. It made sense that Sam was going about things in a more jason bourne like fashion, without the full support of third echelon. And you can't just be careless with how you mark and execute. Even that is a fantastic mini-game within itself, as are things like the portable emp. The whole idea of you having to do a hand to hand takedown to get mark and execute is also pretty clever.

Now, think about that base. Imagine now that Sam is back in the fold, as it were, what other things they could add to the overall stealth package? People, if they didn't like Conviction, will probably be very glad that Conviction was a success when they get a load of what's in this game. I have no idea myself, but I can get a pretty damn good idea of the potential based on Conviction. Also, something I always felt was extremely cool about Conviction, was how the story and the character's frame of mind actually changed the game's mechanics out of nowhere when you least expected it.

When Sam heard, if I remember, the truth about his daughter, Sam became so damn enraged that the game out of nowhere just gave you an unlimited mark and execute, so you could carry out Sam's rage at the moment within the context of the gameplay, and it was so badass that they did something like that. I've rarely had a more satisfying badass moment in a game. Or did he also find out that he had killed his friend for nothing? I forgot exactly what pissed him off, but he was inside Third Echelon when he found out, and it was crazy.

Oops my fault, Doombringer, this is my last conviction post. All about blacklist from here on out.

We have to talk about conviction in a splinter cell thread. It's the point of reference for mediocrity for the franchise. Basically this needs to look better then conviction for me to care....AT ALL. But based on those images, it already seems worse.

As digi said, it's like they're playing a joke on us. Like they know we hate the CODification of games, and hated what conviction was, that they purposely set these screenshots up to piss us off, only to turn around and say, "just kidding" just before revealing an awesome chaos theory sequel...i HOPE that's what is going on here, i really do. Please, for the love of the franchise let that be what's going on here...

I mean, i genuinely wouldnt have issues believing this was a call of duty screenshot. Would you?

He better still be the Creative director. I wouldn't be too concerned. They are definitely going to still utilize all the best stuff about Conviction. They'd be absolutely insane not to. Last known position, cover system, presentation, and all those other things. They will just obviously add a few new things to the mix. I still expect that fast stealth action to still be possible.

In fact, this picture pretty much guarantees that this will build upon where Conviction left off.

Comparing it to COD is a bit much, don't you think? :P

Ultimately, I welcome Sam being more of a deadly badass. I like Sam actually being deadly in actual gameplay, as opposed to being so incapable when shit hits the fan.

In Conviction whenever things got hectic, I got excited. I'd take out a light, drop down, wreck a fool with hand to hand moves, then, instead of taking advantage of my other marks, I'll purposely not do it, then reposition myself, just to see how interesting and dynamic the situation becomes.

Even the level designs. Did people see how awesome the level designs were in conviction? That's how you design for replayability. Countless ways to do things.

If it's truly just one level, why still bring again the worst level in Conviction? If they wanted us fans to be confident in the direction of this franchise, they'd show a location similar to Third Echelon but nope these are what they release for first impressions.
