I'm not surprised that this was designed as an MMO.. the world has that bland mmo look.

Atmosphere compared to Skyrim or TW2 or some others RPGs is very dull I agree, but it has a pretty art going on and some great effects in everything.

Also dat combat!!

I’m not incredibly far in the game and I don’t want to spoil anything but I do want to give my impressions. Yesterday on Twitter I said I thought it was better than Skyrim and I want to tell you why that is.

I’ve mentioned before that I have a problem with open world games. When given all these options I tend to get paralyzed rather than excited. for some reason Amalur is different and I think I know the reasons why:

The combat in Skyrim is miserable. If games like Bayonetta and God of War are on one end of a spectrum, games like Skyrim are so far on the other end that they have fallen off the spectrum and actually can not even see the spectrum from where they are. It seems like if you want to play a massive open world RPG you have to give up a fun, energetic combat system. The thrill of discovering a cave full of vampires in Skyrim is diminished by the knowledge that once I get in there, fighting them is just going to be a chore.

Amalur is the polar opposite. The combat system in Amalur is fast paced and incredibly deep. I’d say the way this game handles class choice is one of my favorite things about the title. There are three skill trees, might, finesse, and sorcery. As you level up you earn talent points and can invest them into any branch you like. So far pretty standard stuff. The twist is that throwing points into these trees will slowly unlock hybrid classes. For example, I started off in sorcery and chose a pretty standard wizard type class. I got a bonus to my mana pool and that sort of thing. Then I started putting points into finesse and I unlocked a couple of hybrid classes. Now I’m a spell casting rogue with magic blades! I get a bonus to blade weapons and a boost to magic damage. There are tons of these hybrid classes encompassing all the various combinations of talent points and trees. So as you play the game and shuffle your points around you can also be cycling through different class choices each with their own bonuses and special powers.

I do not remember exactly wath you do in 15 minutes. Did you escape the starting area ? Because once you're outside, you can start to see what the game has to offer in term of atmosphere. Personally, I even passed by the first village and the first forest zone to enter the second one, then headed north-est to discovert the tellers'court (or something like that) which offered a whole different ambiance.

Exactly.
The art is high fantasy like World of Warcraft. Tons of unique atmosphere and tons of colors, just beautiful.

Word of Warcraft is high fantasy?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_fantasy

I do not think that means what you think it means. I guess it could be, if you use some of Nikki Gamble's critiria. I'm not sure if that's what you meant though. Something like The Witcher (or any LoTR-like setting--or even TES) seems a lot closer to high fantasy than this sorta corny/campy fantasy world.

Whatever you call it, its more vibrant, colorful and more "out there" in unique designs like WoW IMO,

Aren't you mistaken design and story ? WoW or even Reckoning match, from the stroytelling perpective, exactly the various definitions of High Fantasy. Making a LOTR anime with WoW design can't change the fact it's high fantasy, right ?
It's a matter of themes and backgrounds, not visuals.

Yeah, I accept that it does fit some of the criteria. I also think the things we generally think of as "high fantasy" make me imagine worlds more like The Witcher. I do think that this game is missing the serious tone often associated with high fantasy, at least from what I've been able to gather from the demo. I think it loosely fits the criteria as a fantasy world, but I do not think it strictly follows that model.

Regardless, it has nothing to do with it looking like World of Warcraft (which looks like a cartoon) either. The more cartoonish designs do probably fit with the more lighthearted tone of the world.

I think of this crap as way more high fantasy tha the witcher tbh. The Witcher just oozez of pulp and defo falls in to what i'd call sword and sorcery, which i distinguish from High Fantasy, where i'd say stuff like LotR is the shining example. Where you have clear good and evil, knights on white horses with bugs up their ass and noble warrior elves that hump trees. In the Sword and Sorcery case everything feels more grounded and dirty, nothing is black and white and sorcery ranges from chemistry to dark gods, that kind of thing. But that's just how i see it, i may be totally wrong.

Go pulp though, the story in Amalur sems boring as all hell :P

I give them credit for the attempt though. It's just a title. "High Fantasy" used to be referred to as "Classic" Fantasy at one time as well.

Regardless of all of that it's still a thing that doesn't apply to the aesthetic of world of warcraft. That's more saturday morning cartoon. It fits though.
