Battlefield 1 :: fresh World-War 1 scenario

So what are your thoughts on Battlefield 1? Looks very intersting, let's hope D.I.C.E. gets a hold of the online-part at launch this time ;)

also taken from GamePur:

Electronic Arts has confirmed that Battlefield 1 PC release in North America will be a "Digital Only" - there will no disc. Amazon and GameStop have both updated their listing of Battlefield 1 PC version with a text "No Disc". Speaking to our friend at PC Gamer, an EA representative said: "Here in North America, there will be a PC box version that you can buy in stores that will have a code in the box and no disc. If you buy that same PC box version Internationally, some countries will offer a disc inside."

interesting. that's about it so far. the trailer made it far more exciting then that war is ever shown to be, so creative licence is in effect here thank god, but i need to see gameplay to really gauge how it is. dice are pretty good at cutting together a good trailer only to release a buggy mess. so consider me cautiously optimistic.

I hope WW1 means more basic kits this time around- less customization - sights, muzzles, handles, etc (quality over quantity)

I hope for more interesting use of the destruction/levolution. Cool if the game looks nice, but start pushing what you started
Vehicles + destruction + open maps = win

Looking forward to actual gameplay at E3

Other points of interest - flamethrower, mustard gas, HORSES, gunner seats on planes, zeppelin's, bayonettes & melee variety

@Korn: yeah, but for the 400th military-shooter in the past 2 years it looks pretty inviting ;)

I'd rather have a new Rallisport Challenge ;)

Also Overwatch has taught some valuable lessons I hope they take cues from which includes simplification that I already mentioned

Get rid of the unlock system that gives advantages to higher ranks. I want it all to be available off the bat

Yeah.. fat chance. Progression and customization are important to far too many Battlefield players. I don't think Battlefield has a single thing to learn from Overwatch. They have different goals and serve a different purpose.

Didn't used to be like that though :)

Not saying anything I say is going to happen, just think it would be nice
But people like their unlocks and music drops for when they do cool things these days

It's been like that since BF2. And supercilious reward cues are for Overwatch ;)

I'm not a progression fan.. but I'm also not worried about player advantage. I could play on a fresh Battlefield 4 account and still place on the top of the scoreboard. It's not all about gear. They do an okay job at making rifle progression a "side-grade" path.

They failed a little with the vehicle unlocks, even though they come very quickly. You can "service star" a vehicle in one round, but it's not an easy task and you're best off doing it in the secondary seat of whatever vehicle you're unlocking.

And they should eliminate anything that the meta would deem "filler" in the end game.

I like progression too, I like rpg elements in games and leveling and all that. It has it's place

But when OW does their spin on FPS after so many years, it feels pretty refreshing to lose some of that stuff.
Granted there have been other games too along the way to do this, but not as successfully.

I wouldn't mind a different kind of reward system that could come in the form of skins that show your rank. It doesn't have to be some off the wall stuff, but maybe just a uniform upgrade to show you're a General for instance?
They may have to find some alternative like this because WW1 weapons are basic.

Yeah... no one plays Counter Strike ;)

Overwatch and Battlefield couldn't be more different. I (still) don't think that Battlefield 1 has anything to learn from Overwatch. Except for maybe... how not to design a scoreboard.

Yeah the hxc can't handle not seeing their k/d :p

However - it'd be cool if down the road they tracked it on a website elsewhere for you on some level

BUT I was more talking contemporary, not old CS since that is the era the old BF comes from

I just think sometimes sequels and franchises get bogged down by trying to do more all the time. Scaling back is sometimes even more affective
EDITING EYE if you will

That post is pretty hard to follow for having so few words :P

CS:GO is contemporary. Battlefield 2 is old. Battlefield 2 had progression.

Scoreboards aren't inherently flawed and don't need to go away. They provide tangible information to the player and allow for a more complete analysis of the battlefield. Scoreboards make good players play smarter. It's hard enough to follow the flow of information in Overwatch with twelve players on the field, let along sixty four.

They could learn a thing or two from DirtyBomb's scoreboard though. That's the only game to properly isolate and correct kill and assist scoring issues. Their solution is pretty simple: kills and assists have no base value. Scoring is left entirely to damage. This is an area where everyone else needs some guidance. DirtyBomb is the only game that gets it right.

Yeah I'm drinking strong beer on an empty stomach, apologies for that - my thoughts aren't spelled out very well

We're getting distracted here though! I don't want to spiral into all these other issues like scoreboards n such

At the start of some of these franchises like BF, of which I enjoy, I find I really fall for what it is at it's most infantile basic stage. It's so fun and is hopefully at the core of all these games.
But along the way with sequels they feel a need to keep stacking onto what they've already created.
I think it's cool to do this and try new things, etc.
At a certain point though I think there is a critical mass, but instead of scaling anything back it just gets messy.
I think COD is a prime example.
Battlefield isn't necessarily at THAT point yet, but it's getting there

Well... those issues are important to Battlefield. Battlefield 3 introduced the concept of "assist counts as kill", which has become a bit of a theme throughout the genre. Heck, a theme in PVP gaming. Developers have been trying to find a way to balance the way kills and assists reward the player. The motivation was good.. but every single solution has been bad.. except DirtyBomb's.

Battlefront seems to address the semantics a little by changing the language to "critical kill assist", but the entire issue could be averted by removing the concept of a base point value for killing. Hopefully they at least follow and improve upon the Battlefront model here. Assists that count as kills just motivate scrubby players to stay scrubby. Especially scopes.

Scoring is super important in Battlefield because it can incentivize good player behavior. And if it's poorly handled, such as "assist counts as kill", it can model poor player behavior instead.

RE: What Battlefield needs to remove. Shitty game modes like rush. Commanders maybe.

Oh and just in case you were worried: the server browser is a lock. None of that SWBF quick-play crap.

On Rush and all that - I think Xfactor said it well in a review I watched the other day

Lots of times these games cram modes onto a single map they weren't necessarily designed for. I think this is what DICE and games like Rush are guilty of sometimes
If they designed the maps around their specific modes they'd feel better
Instead they retread and reuse maps that are also created for Conquest

It's interesting though, because I bet Rush is most popular on Console, and Conquest on PC? Since both were sort of where each started getting really popular

I've only played DirtyBomb very briefly, but that model sounds really interesting
There's a lot of new ideas floating around and I'm curious to see how some of the big fps guys (Activision/DICE) decide to implement them or not

I'm confused as to why this guy thinks it's legit.. he seems to be a "serious youtuber".

I could imagine it as a mock-up.. but even then it's just.. sloppy. And the $60 weapon attachment DLC is maybe far fetched.

There was a somewhat more believable leak from a youtube COMMENT of all places about some carrier pigeon game mode. I don't think there's much to discuss though. He just suggested a few settings and said that he played a new game mode. He said the gameplay was fun and the mode was dumb.
