Really? Base jumping is one of a handful of reasons that San Andreas has a helluva lot more replay value than GTA4.

Guess you were the demo they designed GTA4 for -- the one that wouldn't miss all the cool stuff they took out of the game.

I was tempted to double dip on the PC version just so I could play with parachute and plane mods.

No you got me wrong there. I think GTAIV is missing a lot of "side activities". Base jumping is cool, but I wouldn't do it all the time. I thought Saints Row 2 was a much more fun game than GTAIV because of all the crazy activities.

Bad boy: Luis Lopez does evil deeds for Gay Tony in GTA IV. He also takes part in death-defying action set pieces reminiscent of big-budget action movies.

Rockstar Games' grand epic Grand Theft Auto IV writes its final chapter Oct. 29. And the action is as over-the-top as the title: The Ballad of Gay Tony.

Available via download exclusively for owners of the Xbox 360 version of the game ($20, and like all GTA titles, for mature audiences), this second and last add-on episode focuses on Luis Lopez, Dominican-born second-in-command to nightclub magnate Gay Tony. The drug-addled Tony, losing a grip on his empire, puts Luis in dangerous circumstances in an attempt to retain his power.

"Luis has to do some of these favors and see if he can get them out of debt," says Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games and lead writer of the episode. "The situation with Tony's drug problems gets worse and worse, and Tony gets more and more out of control."

The events happen at the same time as those in GTAIV, which has sold more than 14 million copies worldwide since its release in April 2008 (for Xbox and PS3). It focused on the "coming to America-type story" of former Eastern European soldier Niko Bellic in Liberty City.

The first downloadable episode, The Lost and the Damned, released in February, focused on Johnny Klebitz, a member of biker gang The Lost. It and Gay Tony remain Xbox 360 exclusives. Both also will be out Oct. 29 on a $40 GTA: Episodes From Liberty City disc that can be played without the original game.

"I know, as a consumer, I'm more comfortable buying songs, which are almost like playing a jukebox, than I am buying movies as purely digital items," Houser says. "We all feel that way, so we can surely get more people to experience it if we put it on a disc."

Packed with action set pieces à la films such as Mission: Impossible and Bad Boys, Gay Tony has Luis at one point parachuting from a helicopter onto a glass-windowed skyscraper. Inside he blasts his way to his prey a few floors below and shoots his target, who then topples out of the bullet-ridden window. Luis dives out after him, wearing a parachute that glides him to safety.

In another scene, Luis drops on to the top of a moving subway train from a bridge and unhooks one of the cars for a maniacal high-rolling collector of one-of-a-kind artifacts. A Skyhook chopper airlifts the freed subway car away.

A man of action, Luis is torn between friends and family and his quest for power and riches. But as he climbs higher in Liberty City's social circles, he discovers that the upper crust has some issues.

Gay Tony's cast of out-of-control characters allowed Houser and the game designers to get in touch with their inner Michael Bay. "We definitely wanted it to feel more like the way action films are when they get ridiculous," says Houser.

"Suddenly you're lifting up train cars with helicopters and it looks amazing and ridiculous, and after what you've gone through in the past, you're like, 'wow, this is a really good payoff for completing this journey.' "

Those guns look exactly the same.

Check out the trailer, you can see the AA-12 replica up close at 0:35, and can definitely see that it is the AA-12. Plus in the scene with the guy who lost his pants at 0:39, there is the AA-12 replica case in the background to the right of the screen . . . looks like an arms deal going down.

Also, at 1:03, looks like P90 replica is also in the game.

Luis certainly looks like he's getting his hands on the most serious batch of ordinance in GTA IV, yet. From the looks of it, mostly recoiless stuff meant for backliners, but extremely deadly all the same.

Oooh my bad. I didn't see that he specified a certain point in the video showing the gun for real. Yeah, it's obviously the same. Cool.

From a technical standpoint, it's a nothing feature. But R* North made such a big deal about not including stuff like that in GTA IV, for a battery of reasons, that GTA fans are making a bigger deal about it now that it is back, than it deserves.

All things considered, and this expansion pak being more of R* North's idea of fan service, I can understand the excitement and feel a bit of it myself.

Stuff like this was axed primarily for two reasons: ONE - Liberty City being practically set in a realistic, post-911 replica of NYC, R* did not want to risk upsetting anyone who still feels that it's still too soon after 9/11 for such shenanigans (which is why there are still no airplanes in GTA IV); and TWO - GTA IV was supposed to be a serious break from past GTA titles, with a more down to Earth, "something like this could really happen" narrative. And for the most part they have succeeded admirably.

However, from what I have read on GTA IV: TBOGT so far, this expansion pak is more fan service than anything. More colorful and 'videogamy' than any version of GTA IV to date (kinda like a modern Vice City), with tons of over-the-top, 'you're are never going to see anything remotely like this ever happen in real life even if you lived to be 100,' moments like San Andreas, etc. Basically, it is all the fun and over the top stuff that GTA fans have been craving for from the past, merged into their new engine, running on Xbox 360 - vis a vis, fan service.

I think in a sense, this is what people are really excited about. When GTA IV original came out, skydiving/base jumping in particular was singled out as something we'd not likely see in GTA IV - ever. But it is quite apparent from the look of the first trailer (subway train getting hijacked while in motion by a S-64 Skycrane), that TBOGT is set to bring all the insanity of past GTAs back with full current-gen treatment, and to be honest, the very thought of that makes the tip of my penis tingle.
