Rage runs on id's next-generation "id Tech 5" engine, which will also power Doom 4 and is the successor to the Doom 3 engine that blew us away when it was first shown in 2002. And in my view, Rage offers a comparable level of visual fidelity as in Ubisoft's BG&E2 teaser video, which is running on unspecified hardware after all. In other words, Rage is the most impressive looking game we have actually seen running by quite some margin.

But id Tech 5 means bigger things for the Texas-based firm - and for gaming at large - than just its own two forthcoming games that run on it. More than ever before, id is now going to be all about licensing its technology for the rest of the development scene to benefit from, and as we learn in this interview, they're serious about competing with rival tech from Epic.

Neat--id has always been serious about licensing their technology, but they've never been as successful at selling id tech as middleware as Epic has with Unreal Engine. I wish them the best of luck. It seems like very cool technology. I can't wait to see Doom 4, and Wolfenstien, regardless of which engine the latter uses.

And it's id, or Id, but certainly not ID ;)

I couldnt agree more, you see that's what I am talking about, I dont want all games to keep only using UE3. This engine clearly looks MILES better!

Has Doom 4 been announced ???? God I loved Doom 3, one of the BEST FPSs EVER!

Yes.

That's not counting outside developers like Splash Damage, Raven, Nerve, etc.. which all work with id on their IP. They are working on Doom and RAGE right now, which is impressive considering the size of the company, but Doom is probably in a relative pre-production state right now, and most of their resources are focused on fine tuning id tech and getting RAGE out the door.

QuakeCon is going to be hot. I hope we see Wolfenstien!

Perhaps you're right, since Doom 3 Quake 4 and Quake Wars have been released. But if Rages comes out in 2009 it'll be 6 years between actual id's releases.

They once were - Quake 2 and Q3 engines were massively successful, it seems they were very unfortunate with their timing for Doom 3 engine.

In terms of overall licenses, it's not even close. Hell, every single id tech version (up to id tech 4) combined wouldn't even match the total number of games that licensed Unreal Engine 2.

Oh chill.. like you're the only one who equates color palettes to a game engine. And I was more on someone else's case in the other thread than yours, anyway. I hope they're able to gain more licenses than the past too, if that's what they're after.

I also love Doom 3. I wouldn't call it one of my favorite FPS, but I do think it receives a lot of unwarranted hate and is way underrated. Oh, and people who insist on using a flashlight mod suck. It defeats the purpose of the most fundamental design decision in the entire game. I'm sure Doom 4 will take an entirely different approach to horror and action though.

IMO Id is a much better middleware developper than Epic, and their games too. You just have to look to Carmack wich is a genius.
So far, Doom 3 was an instant classic for me. I don't know why people bashed it back in the days it launched, I will never understand it.
by the way, isn't tech 5 lead hardware the 360??? I think Carmack pointed it long time ago.

nice too see id come back to reclaim their title, its time that epics monopoly gets challenged

id will be in better position next gen, since the engine will be fully functional unlike epic who had to give pieces of ther engine because they wheren't done

I like the concept of how good a game looks not being the biggest drain on performance with the engine and that artists have the freedom to change whatever they want at will.

Sounds really innovative and the performance appears to really be there for multiple systems. I'd love to see what a japanese rpg maker does with this amazing engine.

we don't have two guys to take the PC art and crunch it down to make it work on consoles. It's the identical media that works across all platforms, and that allows us as a small team to develop it on four platforms simultaneously without really incremental cost to do so.

That's amazing. If they get enough people to take a serious look at this thing and notice that all platforms look that amazing and are running at 60fps stable, this engine could really be the future of gaming. If ID nails down the tools and such.

It doesn't appear to have any of the visual annoyances that usually make me look at some UE3 games and wish things were better.

Ironic, since blue is like, the color of depression :P

The coolest thing about RAGE is that it looks that pretty and is running @ 60fps on the 360. If RAGE can hit 60fps on the 360, then it says good things about the lifespan of current PC tech, like the Geforce 8 series. Games like Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 should easily run maxed out on an 8800, and other future titles, such as RAGE and Doom, should manage to yield pretty high performance on what will be old generation tech by the time they ship. Neat!

That's not even considering new Source stuff, or even UE3, which has proved to be quite scalable already. Counter Strike 2 may be the biggest thing in PC FPS for a long time, and chances are that it will be so damn scalable that you'll be able to run it well on an old Athlon and a first generation DX9 part.

It's all working out nicely. I mean don't get me wrong, I like to see games that push PC technology to its limits, but titles also have to scale so that people with older hardware can get the most mileage out of them. The market can't demand that everyone has the newest piece of hardware, and while it never has, it seems like the flow of software moving forward will be less demanding of newer hardware, at least for the time being.

And I hate to disappoint you all, but I guarantee that people will still be using Unreal Engine 3 next gen, prior to the release of UE4. There are still projects built on UE2.5 in the works, and several current generation titles that use the engine.

For Japan, the color blue usually means very good things :)

Like wealth or prosperity or something like that. I forgot what it means specifically, but I know it's a very good color. Kishimoto (guy in charge of naruto manga) recently described some major event coming up for character kakashi as being blue in color. Which suggests something awesome is coming.

Yea other titles will definitely continue using Unreal tech, but I'd like to see them mix it up. If ID can nail down the tools for this engine, I see it being really big for not just pc gaming, but the entire industry.

As good as this engine looks and i'm looking forward to Doom4/Rage, no on knows how it will behave in other devs/publidhers hands, hell no ones knows how it will behave when ID release any of its games on it, so before we all hail it as the next coming lets see how it behaves when a game gets released, i remeber when UE3 was being touted much the same things were being said by others, but teething problems and certain engine weaknesses coupled with devs getting to know the engine have resulted in some less than stella performing titles, i see the same thing happening with this engine also, its the nature of the beast, and also what are the 2 titles currently being developed on it by id, "FPS", i can see it now yrs down the line, " oh no not another tech5 engine game, i hate tech5 games there always full of problems and all look the same and play shit!!!" (i kid i kid ;p ).
