Cheers dc. Cool interview - how can anyone resist Cliffy's charm?

I uploaded the campaign footage onto my HDTV, and it looks awesome. Then straight after I played Gears of War, and it seemed even more awesome. I think the environment textures are basically the same as the first one, but the character lighting and vistas are a trillion times more impressive. Saying that, they still have a couple of months to 'polish' things up, so I actually expect the environment textures to be better than the first one come release. Add to that all the new gameplay features (which is far more important that graphics) and this game is shaping up beyond my expectations.

I have a very strong feeling this will get GOTY.

GameStop Hypes “Gears of War 2” with In-Store Tournaments

Participants Receive Extra 30 Percent Trade-In Credit During Event

GameStop Corp. (NYSE:GME), the world’s largest video game and entertainment software retailer, today announced that it will host GEARS OF WAR video game tournaments at 2,000 of its U.S. GameStop locations on Friday, July 25, 2008.

Each tournament will provide players with an opportunity to test their skills one-on-one with other contestants in a single-elimination tournament. Participating GameStop locations will begin their tournaments at 9:30 p.m., local time.

Customers who trade in used games during the tournament will receive an extra 30 percent trade-in credit good toward the reservation of GEARS OF WAR 2, which is available this November. Well Fable2 got allot of love at GC and GOW2 got none because of the German violence game laws, so it make perfect sense that GOW2 will get most of the love at PAX ( and Halo of course), and who is to say Fable wont be there playable on the floor for the attendees?

Not too surprising really, and given how poorly Gears of War was received by those who bought the Windows version, I'm not sure many people will really care. Epic has really been struggling more than anyone would have anticipated on the PC side, gamers favored releases like Call of Duty significantly over UT3, and while a lot of critics on the PC side criticized it for failing to evolve, it's performed pretty well on the PS3.

I think GoW is seen by most as a typical console (in this case Xbox 360) game, so no wonder it failed on the PC.. Being 3rd person and released a year later doesn't help aswell.. Epic really needs to get it's act together on the PC, and come up with something new after UT, a new succesfull IP on PC.. ID is kindof in the same boat, the Quake succes is over, their hope is now with Rage (which I hope is not to console focussed), and maybe Doom 4 if they learned anything from the minor flop that was Doom 3..

Only one of the 3 big traditional FPS developers left on PC, and that is Valve.. Who are still going strong with stuff like the Half-Life Episodes, TF2, Portal, and the upcoming Left4Dead.. Innovation and new IP's is the key, and having a good SP series in Half-Life..

Valve, DICE, and Infinity Ward is more like it. Call of Duty's community on the PC is no joke, it's larger than Team Fortress, and at this point significantly bigger than Battlefield. That said, BF2 still has a strong standing community and 2142 does as well (to a somewhat lesser extent), and they're patiently awaiting a follow up to Battlefield 2.

These are the major players in the multiplayer arena, for now, but they're not the only players in the FPS game. Crytek and Monolith deserve attention, and both could possibly craft MP friendly shooters down the line. And who knows.. maybe Project Origin and Crysis Wars can increase their base in those areas.

Epic and id have failed to evolve in the FPS game, and in many way are being left behind. I don't think being third person hurts Gears Of War though, as we've seen plenty of other third person shooters on the PC turn a reasonable success.. and indeed many console to PC conversions have met a greater amount of success than Gears of War.

I don't think id is as far behind, which, is surprising really. RAGE looks promising, and I'm hopeful that Doom 4 and Wolfenstein will yield positive results. I'm a little worried about Wolfenstein, but hopefully Raven gives us fundamentally good gameplay despite its aging looks.

The one thing that separates id from Epic is strong partnerships with other developers. Valve has taken the same approach and been met with great success.. and stuff like L4D and The Crossing shows that they'll continue to follow that path.

I'm also hoping that 3D Realms shocks us and delivers the goods with Duke. I don't care if it pushes the tech side forward, so long as it delivers some strong gameplay and, almost most importantly, humor.

G4TV PAX Multiplayer Hands on:

First things first... the game is 5 versus 5 and it definitely adds a lot more action to the matches. Thankfully, adding two more players doesn't seem to have slowed down the game and it runs smooth, even is the most hectic firefights. We cannot comment on how these two extra gamers will affect lag over Xbox Live as we were playing over a local System Link.

So is the game "bigger, better, and more badass?"

Yes. Yes it is. If you were a fan of the original Gears, we're pretty sure you're also going to love Gears of War 2. It takes everything that was great about the first game, amps it up, and adds a lot of new things to freshen up the gameplay.

New Observer Mode

The original Gears had a fairly lackluster observer mode for deceased players, but this is all fixed for Gears 2. You'll get the original chase cam and map views, but Epic has added a full, free-floating camera for manual observation. It definitely lets you keep on top of all the action instead of watching your stupid teammate search around the map for that elusive enemy they just can't seem to find.

Stopping Power and The Tale of the Nerfed Shotgun

Stopping power is a BIG deal. It completely changes the flow of the game and mostly puts an end to the frantic shotgun dance that was so popular in the original game. It's much harder to charge an opponent head-on, as you will lose all of your speed as you take more fire. This makes the Lancer extremely powerful at mid-range because shotgun users will have a harder time closing the gap.

This doesn't mean, however, that the shotgun isn't still deliciously powerful up close and personal. Well, unless your opponent has picked a downed enemy up and is using them as a...

Meat Shield

The meat shield is a useful new ability that let's players grab a downed enemy as a human (or Locust) shield. The enemy's corpse holds up quite nicely to incoming fire and will even take a few shotgun blasts before it disintegrates. If you have any skill with the pistol, you'll probably want to think twice about curb stomping your foes and start picking them up for a nice shield instead.

Crawling

When you're downed, but not out, you'll be able to tap the 'A' button and a direction to crawl away from your impending death. It won't get you too far, but it can get you behind cover to give your teammate time to come revive you or even make an enemy miss from a distance.

Player Lobby

While we weren't playing on Xbox Live, we were able to check out the party system before each match. There were several options we noticed including selecting your starting weapon, map voting, and changing gametypes on the fly. Definitely an improvement over the first game and we can't wait to see how it performs on Live.

Closing Thoughts

At the end of the day, Gears of War 2 takes the team-oriented gameplay from the original game to the next level. There are more options, balance fixes, and two more players. We still regularly play Gears of War, and we're looking forward to playing Gears of War 2 for the next 2 years.
