I didn't mean to imply that you hadn't played it, but I don't see what's wrong with talking about Crysis. It's the real sequel to Far Cry, after all. All I meant is that your post is a perfect example of the unfair criticism that both of these games receive. I mean really--linear? And then you compare it to a game from a different genre? Give me a break.
How is it unfair criticism though? If you turn down the graphics in Crysis and play it it's not an amazing experience IMO. Some people might have fun with it. Both Crysis and Far Cry are only linear when compared to what's been shown of Far Cry 2. Even if there are paths you must follow or places you can't go in Far Cry 2, there's still no world map in FC1 / Crysis and that's the only reason I brought up Oblivion.

There's nothing revolutionary about a giant sandbox FPS? Show me someone else who had done anything remotely simular prior to Far Cry. What's really funny is that Ubi shows a few little features that may not even dramatically improve upon the gameplay of FC2 and people go crazy--OMG a compass--OMG you can set grass on fire!
Well you're taking sandbox a bit far, FC1 and Crysis are about as 'sandbox' as Halo 1, 2, and 3. Hell, even Halo 1 emphasized taking different areas in different orders (like level 2). Trespasser on PC did this sort of stuff a long time ago too, for that matter.

And I still believe it receives a lot of hate because it's a major exclusive on the platform, and likewise, FC2 is receiving most of its love based on the merits of being a multiplatform title alone. People who stick to a single platform that isn't the PC are excited about having a potential "Crysis killer." That's about it.
All exclusives attract a lot of hate and a lot of love. FC2 is receiving a lot of praise because of the seemingly amazing things it's doing. The only people that are calling it a potential "Crysis killer" are graphics whores really. People wouldn't bring up Crysis if not for the graphics, and FC2 has amazing graphics for the consoles.

You're insane if you think that Far Cry and Crysis don't have loads more in common than Too Human and Eternal Darkness. And no, it's not just a case of being in the same genre.
Oh I agree they're very similar. Both graphics intensive games (for their times) that take place mostly in jungles, both of which divulge into shooting non-humans. The level design is very similar in both as well.

Not particularly hyped.. but I'm not uninterested either. This is exactly my type of game. There are two things that could make this game stand out: a compelling campaign and impressive AI, neither which we've really seen put to the test. Immersion is great, but as a gameplay experience it will only take you so far.
Standout for you. I think just the truly open world is a standout for me. The 'immersion' factors they were talking about aren't really amazing to me either though. How great does the AI need to be to be impressive to you? For so long in games we've been basically fighting the same AI. Halo, Far Cry 1, and a few others off the top of my head had standout AI...

The game is impressive, but it needs to be fun too. I'm not saying it won't be, I'm just approaching with more caution than the pack, it seems. "Oooh! FIRE!"--that's not going to do it for me.
Don't take optimism, anticipation and hope as a lack of caution though. Personally I intend to buy the game and play it fully, just like something like Far Cry even if it's not amazing I think it will have some fun factor.

And if anything, I stand to be wowed more than most, since I don't particularly think Ubisoft is the most capable FPS developer. Rainbow and Ghost Recon have both fallen quite far. Vegas is a pretty capable game (just not very.. Rainbow) though, and I love their Splinter Cell games, so maybe Montreal has what it takes.
Oh yea, in recent years I think Ubisoft has been horrible. Just by watching the videos I can tell this is going to be one of their better ones, even if it's not super great playing.

This video is horribly compressed :|
Yeah, what's up with that...it's really horrible. Makes the game look very poor.

I'm interested in this one, but I'll definitely have to sit out the reviews before I make up my mind.

Crysis is for sure a very under rated game. People need to look past the visuals and see they aren't the only great part of the game.

This is looking great. As someone who absolutely has to have immersion in a game (I hated Crysis having that damn "teleportation" of the camera in vehicles) this is another reason to make me ecstatic. This is gunna make the game that much funner. And the AI is very aggressive and intense, something a lot of games are straying from. More and more are like GRAW or Halo where the guys take cover and go at it with some caution. This feels so much crazier and fast paced. And the driving AI in particular is looking great. The first footage I saw was a chase and it was pretty great. Its nice to see a game where you get rammed and messed up and stuff, and getting run off the road into a building was just perfect. Visually I dunno.. The shaders are a bit iffy, espesially the skin shaders. But it still is pretty damn impressive looking. Its got nothing on Crysis, but just about everything else is pretty well chumped.

I stopped playing Far Cry 1 at the fort, with all the rockets-launching aliens...

It started great, i spent hours on end going stealthily, taking side routes and avoiding climbing in vehicles (i hate game vehicles in FPSes). Then.... it started to be suspensefuly "fantastic" (i mean sci-fi going), and badang... big monsters with rocket launcher arms... i died and died and died until i managed to go to the lighthouse and quit the game without ever going again. That part ruined the mood of the game.

I hope that one doesn't have the flaw.

as a side note, i finished crisis, it was funny to see a boss coming straight from a shmup, but it was no farcry. I had to play using a minimum of details (it was ugly), but i still had a bit of fun with the suite and stealth. I liked the ennemies, war-of-the-worldesques.
